FRIDAY, FEB. 24, 1893 The New York "Homestead" pub lishes a complete exhibit of the world's supply and demand of bops for the cur rent season ending August 31 , 1893. The exact shortage of the world's supply is 3,500,000 pounds, which must be made up by the consumption of . old stock. There has been enough on band for the purpose. There is an estimated short age of 6,000,000 pounds in the English supply, and England has yet to secure hops to meet the demand before the end of the season. It is noteworthy that while every effort is made to keep the price of American hops below 25 cents per pound, foreign hops have been im ported at a cost of 39 cents in addition to the duty, thus showing- American brewers are willing to pay fully 55 cents for foreign hops, while they begrudge 25 cents for American hops, which are in finitely superior to the impoi-red article, which are mostly cheap Russian growth, repacked in Germany and labeled as choice Bavarian hops, especially for the export trade. The output of beer in this country was increased by 500,000 barrels during the first four months of the ' pre sent season. ' - It is now known to be a fact that there will be a new freight schedule adopted by the Union Pacific system east from. Portland over the Pacific division. ' This will go into effect on the 26th. Portland sees that something mast be done to hold her trade with Eastern Oregon, and has succeeded in accomplishing the adoption of this new schedule. It is not positively know what reduction is to be made. , What Pendleton now wants, says the Tribune, is a new freight schedule from the east and she and Walla Walla can get it if concerted action' is taken. There is no reason why Spokane can have her freight delivered twenty cents on a hundred cheaper over the Union Pacific system than Pendleton and Walla Walla, and the two latter cities ought to rise up in their might and show this company what virtue there is in the Interstate Commerce Commission. The Dallas Transcript nurses its sore spot in the. following language: ''Ea ley's portage railway bill should have passed, as it was one of merit, inasmuch as it was providing for an outlet of the products of a vast eection east of the cascades. In the matter of appropria tions nineteen-twentieths comes to the Willamette valley; and if our cousins across the mountains make a big kick because of this discrimination, some day, we webfooters may not be sur prised." The Chrokiclb does not know bow hard a knock it will take to sur prise "webfooters," but if losing the Monmouth appropriation, the Willam ette canal, and several other things dear to the heart of those mist-benighted denizens would jog their understanding . a little, it ia possible they could be sur prised two years from now. So far, Oregon has furnished six vic tims for the mortuary record of those frozen to death during the winter, says - a valley exchange. But those who have thus lost- their lives were indiscreet liunters whoee love for the sport led them np into the deep fastnesses ot ' mountain forests, where unexpectedly they Ioitp encountered blinding snow utorms and a colder atmosphere. Los ing their way, they perished as might be expected. . At no time during the winter has the thermometer fell below 10 de drees above zero in the Willamette val ley. The appointment of Judge Gresham by Cleveland is probably the first case on record where a president has crossed parties in the selection of his cabinet. , The fact will please the great majority of the American people; though, for they will recognize that Cleveland is not bound to any man or set of men, polit ical or otherwise, and proposes to be captain 'of the ship in all that the word implies. ' A Million Friends. A frierid in' need is a friend i ndeed and not less than one million people have found" just -such a friend in Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs, and Colds. Dalles City. A Cordial Reception. Early one morning, recently. 1 called to see a gentleman who bad not yet left his bed. I was met at the door by a woman whose sleeves were rolled up, who wore an ample apron . upon which were various spots of flour and whose face was not entirely free from similar spots. It was "bake day," but she did not embarrass me by any reference to the fact or any apology as to her appear ance. She asked me into the parlor and after sending, one of the children up stairs to notify the father of my pres ence, re-entered the parlor and chatted Until her husband appeared about vari ous topics in an entertaining, easy man ner, quite as though she had been ex pecting and was all fixed np to receive me. It was simply delightful and my great grief is that ' 1 have no sufficient excuse to make another early morning call at the same home. Detroit Free Press. . . - " A Way .ot Cooking: Rodents. . The negro slaves of Jamaica' used to regard rats as a dainty, their masters not providing them with any other meat. Their method of cooking the toothsome rodents was to impale each one on a long wooden skewer,' after cleaning the animal and cutting off the tail, turning it briskly around over a fire- Until the hair was all burned . off. Then it was scraped until free from fur, and finally the end of the skewer was stuck into the ground, inclined toward the fire, until it was toasted dry and crisp, thus being mado ready for the meal. Washington Star. ' ' A Train of Elevator Cars. From an elevator point of view the new Masonic temple building in Chicago will be the most important in the world. It will have twenty-four cars built in a circular shaft having a 250 foot rise. There will be express elevators, way and freight trains. The first will go to the top floor without stopping,' while the others will stop either at every floor, or at the fifth, tenth, fifteenth and so on. They will not run at full speed, prob ably because passengers do not like the sensation of flying. Chicago Journal of Commerce; A Solid Silver Dinner Servloe. Probably the most magnificent com plimentary present ever received by a European sovereign is the emperor of Austria's silver wedding gift to the czar. It consists of a dinner service of solid sil ver, superbly wrought and chased, each piece bearing an imperial eagle. The service is for twenty-four persons, and there are 280 pieces. London Truth. Cotton Seed OH Generates Fire. The recent losses by fire in the cargo of ships carrying cotton has shown that cotton seed oil, when held in the cotton on the outside of the bale, rapidly oxidizes and generates spontaneous combustion. Its subsequent owners have taken millions of dollar from it. 1 ' - "It makes me tired People ask me is marriage a fail ure ? Of course 'faint ; s'pose I don't know my biz what am I here for?"
