The true site of the Garden of Eden
has been the subject of almost endless
controversy and conjecture. The three
continents of the old .world have been
gone over by the theologians and anti
quarians in a vain search for its most
probable location. From China to the
Canary islands and from the Mountains
of the Moon to the coast of the Baltic,
each country has been the. subject of
careful search. Every spot in Europe,
. Asia and Africa that could possibly be
the place designated in the first chapter
of Genesis has been examined, and yet,
says the Philadelphia press, no place has
been found that corresponds even in
the slightest degree with the scriptural
account of the first abode of the projec
tors of the human race. One of the
most ancient opinions, that given by
Josephus, is that it whs the country
whiih lies between the Ganges and the
Nile. This view imagines Eden as being
a very widely extended country, euibrac-
r ing all that vast territory which is
bounded on the eatit by the Indus, and
on the west by Egypt's great water
course. As the "Garden" is said to
have been "to the eastward in Eden,"
Josephus places it definitely in the val
ley of the Euphrates. Von Hammer,
the famous oriental scholar, places it in
Bactria; others locate it in Babylonia,
at the confluence of the Euphrates and
the Tigris. Captain Wilford, a profound
student of eastern antiquaries, has
labored for years to locate Eden in
Bamian, south of the Koosh mountains.
Euttman puts in down as being in India ;
Heider, in his "History of Mankind,"
. identifies it with the present vale of
Cashmere. Many oriental sects believe
it was on the island of Ceylon, while the
Greeks place it at Beth Eden, on Leba
non. Lastly, many eminent scholars
regard the whole story as being a gigan
tic myth.
Persons desiring to visit the Chicago
fair in their own yacht or small craft
can go there via the St. Lawrence river
if their vessels do hot exceed 133 feet in
length, 28 feet beam and 8 feet draught'.
They can sail to Quebec, tow up to Mon
treal, paes through the Lachine canal,
cine miles long, and be i piloted thence
to Chicago. This is the best way for
large yachts to go.- Smaller craft, es
pecially if steam propelled, may go by
the Erie canal, 3-52 miles from Albany to
Buffalo, hat they must not. exceed 100
feet in length, or 6 feet draught, nor
must they exceed 10 feet G inches above
the water line, in order to pass under
the bridges. There are 72 locks on the
canal and 4 miles an. hoar is the speed
limit.

Judson of Pierce county, Wash., has
Introduced a bill to make primaries res
pectable and decent,' regulate them and
punish frauds. One section requires
that only legally registered Yotera shall
cast a ballot, and everything in future
must be done decently and in order.
There is a world of room for reform in
this direction and we hope the bill will
become a law.
.Rule or ruin is the policy at Olympia.
Allen or nobody is the motto at Washing
ton's capitol. If the state wants more
than one U. S. Senator to represent
them. Allen should be' in Washington,
D. C, or the supreme courts should de
clare his chair abolished on the ground
that it is an . unnecessary incumbrance.
The grave announcement is made by
a spiritualistic periodical that it has
secured the "exclusive"-collaboration of
William Skakespeare in the spirit world,
and that any alleged communications
from the dramatist appearing elsewhere
are spurious.
President Harrison has signed the
Pacific reserve proclamation, and defi
nitely settled the Bainier-Tacoma
controversy for the present.

Death la at BI City. '
. The shadows of metropolitan life could
scarcely have a more ghastly illustra
tion than in the case of the corpse of the
old man at a Greenwich street window
staring into the windows of the elevated
cars for two days, the butt of the train
men's Christmas time humor. A little
while before was the killing and man
gling of another man on the elevated al
most immediately opposite a window
where sat his wife and child looking in
nocently out and wondering who it was
being carried away under the protecting
blanket.
We axe wont to look upon the extraor
dinary situations created by the novelist
and playwright with satirical severity,
but the pen of Sue, Dumas, Dickens and
of a host of imitators never conjured up
from imaginations vivid with research
and practical observation a more pa
thetically impressive picture than is pre
sented in the dead man at the Greenwich
street window. Yet such things are so
common in New York that they are
swallowed up in the great maelstrom of
metropolitan events forgotten in a day.

. The January payments of interest
and dividends in this city are the
heaviest of the year. Upon Jan. 1 in
terest matures on a large portion of the
national debt, and the government pays
the quarterly interest on the 4 per
cents., about $5,596,000, and also $1,838,
705 semiannual interest on the Pacific
railroad bonds known as the "currency
sixes." The semiannual interest on the
debt of the city, due Jan. 1, is now
being paid. The city interest due is
$1,516,075, of which $5S9,773 goes into
the city sinking fund. The principal of
the city debt upon which interest is dis
bursed is $52,417,800. It is estimated
that all the money paid in Philadelphia
for January interest and dividends ex
ceeds $10,000,000. Philadelphia Ledger.

says: "I contracted a cold early last
spring that settled on my lungs, and had
hardly recovered from it when I caught
another that hunz on all summer and
left me with a hacking cough which
thought I never would get rid of. I had
used Chamberlain's Cough Remedy
some fourteen years ago with much sue
cess, and concluded to try it again
When I got through with one bottle my
cough had left me, and I have not euf
fered with a cough or cold since. I have
recommended it to others, and all speak
