.The sad news cornea from Kentucky
that iu the recent contest in the legisla
ture of that state over the choice of a
succeaeor to Mr. Carlisle in the United
States senate, the Hon. Henry Watter
son was once more compelled to march
through a slaughter-house to an open
grave.
General Compson is accredited with
securing two appropriations for the Ore
gon National Guard at the hands of this
legislature: The Gullixson bill, giving
them $40,000, has passed , both houses
over the governor's veto. . The Ford
bill, to give the National Guard $60,000,
in lieu of the mill tax, also passed both
bouses. That gives the state militia a
cool hundred thousand dollars to oper
ate with the coming t;o years. The
governor cannot well veto the Ford bill
without restoring the mill tax of both
the militia aud state university, and
adding considerably to what they will
now receive. Ford claims there was an
understanding'that if he would increase
the sum carried in his bill from $15,000
to $30,000 a year, the governor's veto of
the Gullixon bill should be .sustained,
Bat Gullixon and his friends went back
on that and the result is a double
appropriation through combinations.
When the matter came before the House,
of passing the Gullixson bill over the
veto Ford denouueed it aa being in bad
faith and an outrage on the tax payers
of this state.

MRS. FRASER,
An unusual offer
- tne one that a made by the propri
etors of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy.
Unusual, but made in cood faith.
It's a reward of $500 for an incura
ble case of Catarrh. If you have
one, the money's for you. But you
can't know whether you have one,
till you've tried Dr. Hage's Kemedy.
What's . incurable by any other
means, yields to that. By its mild,
soothing, cleansing and healing
properties, it cures the worst cases,
no matter of how lone: standing:.
That's the reason the money can be
offered. There's a risk about it, to
be sure. JLsut it s so small that the
proprietors are willing to take it.
A he symptoms ot catarrh are.
headache, obstruction of nose, dis
charges falling into throat, some
times profuse, watery, and acrid, at
others, thick, tenacious, mucous,
purulent, bloody, putrid and offen
sive ; eyes weak, . ringing in ears,
deafness ; offensive breath ; . smell
and taste impaired, and general
debility. Only a few of these
symptoms likely to be present at
once. '

A pitiful etory cornea from Cathlamet,
Wash.: Last Monday evening Mrs,
Cardincll, living a few miles out in the
country, went to the spring to get a
pail of water. While stooping over she
lost her balance and fell headlong into
the 6pring. The water was only about
two feet deep, but the liole was bo very
email that the woman was unable to
extricate herself. The children, who
had accompanied her, saw their mother's
predicament and grasped her feet and
tugged away with desperation, bat they
did not possess strength equal to the oc
casion, and after exhausting themselves
they abandoned the attempt and dis
tractedly returned home, not knowing
what to do. Next . morning the eldest
girl decided to walk to Cathlamet and
secure assistance. Alter trudging through
the deep snow, some distance her
strength gave out, and becoming fright
ened she returned home. So from Mon
day until Saturday the three little ones
remained in the house, with the dead
body of their mothor a short distance
awav. The cold provisions that were
left were soon exhausted, and not know
ins? how to cook or provide for them'
selves the children vere in a pitiful
plight when found by their father. He
arrived lust in time to save himself
from being childless as well as a widower,
