Not So Safe After ALU
"Do you see that tall, spare man lean
- lug against the rail over there?" said
James Vance, steward of " the Athenian
lub. "Well, I'll tell yon a little yarn
in wliich he played an amusing part.
Some years ago Haqnette & Haggeman
got in a big safe, all gorgeous with paint
And glorious with impossible landscapes.
Ernest Haqnette was very proud of it,
- -and in his bustling, eager way would
how it to all old patrons of the place,
expatiating upon its merits.'
"One evening he was engaged in ehow
- ing a party of gentlemen the wonders of
the safe, and ran on; 'No burglar-' could
ever get into that. I tell you. He couldn't
open it in a week. It's the safest safe in
this town, for money.
" Oh, I don't know about that,' said
that tall man, who was then leaning on
the bar just as he is now leaning on the
. rail. 'I don't think it's so safe.'
"This startled Haqnette a little. No
one had ever questioned that safe before
in that off hand way. He flushed a lit
tle while the stranger regarded him non
chalantly. Haqnette felt nettled and at
last blurted out:
"I'll put $500 in that safe and if yon
can get it out in six hours you can have
it Axes, jimmies and all tools are al
lowed, but dynamite barrtid.' ,
"Til go you,' said our tall friend.
'We'll just make it half an hour and no
tools however.'
"Haquette promptly dumped $500 into
a bag, put the bag into the safe and
turned the combination, 'There yon
are, he said defiantly.
"The tall man got down on his knees,
put an ear against the safe where the
tumblers work and began turning the
knob of the combination. He didn't say
a word, but steadily clicked away. Ha
qnette began to sweat and step around.
"In twenty-three minutes the safe was
open. Our friend over there took the
bag of money, handed it to the dam
founded Haquette and said cynically: 'I
. don't want your maney. They salted
me for a little job like that once. My

She had tasted the sweets of hope; she

Millions of Bed Herring.
The waters of the inlet at this time of
the year are fairly alive with' red her
ring. The general belief is that shipping
will drive these fish from any waters,
but any one standing on " the deck of a
boat lying in the stream can see millions
of them now. Saturday afternoon sev-J
era! boys were observed fishing . in the
old Indian fashion, and they secured a
lot of fish, v The Indian method is as
follows: Take a slender pole about
twenty feet long and drive in on one side
a dozen or two of ten penny nails; then,
sitting in the bow of the boat, propel it
by paddling with the polo. The pole, in
passing through the water, catches the
fish on the nails. In this way a large
quantity may be caught in a short rim a
