- THE "BE.ULS BENEATH THE SEA,
Tire Bca is calm, the wind la fair,
Hot ever a cloud doth lower :
The good ship speeds with the blessed belhi
She bears to Bolt renal tower.
The pilot crossed his brea-st, and cried:
Thank God! the harbor's near.
, :For vesper bells at Tintagel
Ring oot their muhic clear.
Aye, thank tho Lord for our good speed
Across the doubtful seal"
Fooir' sneered tho captain, "thank thyself :
God holds, no hehn for thee." - .
The pilot crossed his breast, and cried.
God pardon thee once more.
And grant that we may safely ooms
Unto the Coruiah shore." '
The captain's oath was on his Use,
Or ever the sun went down.
And while the people thronged the el ids
Above the harbor town,
A mighty wave xwept o'er the sea.
With doll and sullen roar;
The good ship trembled all her length
As she sank to rise no more. .
Then o'er the whelming waters pealed
Aa tolling funeral knells .
For those lost souls) the Baft, sweet chimes
Of the Forrabury bells.
The moss crerp over Boltreaux church.
Where rings no vesper lay;
SUM waits the tower its blessed bells.
And silent stands today.
For low beneath the Cornish wave.
Where tangled wrecks lie deep.
The Forrabury bells are hid
And their ret echoes keep.
But ever 'gains! the billows toss.
And storm winds shriek in glee;
Their muflled chimes the blessed bells
Still ring beneath the sea.
l.ury K. Fleming in Harper's Bazar.
The New Clab Member.
I read conscientiously Sunday after
noon at the clab the weekly rules and
" regulations laid down in the newspapers
concerning the details of life, that I
might regulate my behavior, thereby.;
and I notice that. "initials are not con
sidered good form on note paper, not
even monograms." This did not particu
jariy interest me, as 1 nave for years
. used a firm, plain and unruled paper-
though I do not delight in two sided let
ter writing, and the only notes I am
punctilious in answering are dinner in
vitations and the good wishes of Miss
Porphyry sent to me at the beginning of
each world s year and mine own.
' v But looking up and across the hall 1
saw young Spriggles busily engaged in
the consumption of club paper and en
velopes. Letters stood in high stacks
upon the table. And I formulated this
maxim: The newness of club member
ship is in direct proportion to the
amount of daily correspondence. The
clnbling paraded the club stamp as the
newly married man his wife. And 1
should regret this thrusting of such dan
gerous weapons as pen, ink and paper
into the hands of the wise and the fool
ish, were it not that club paper had Oc
casionally its uses; as when Thackeray
wrote that delightful Roundabout in de
fense of Lord Clyde. Boston Post.

The Kiss In History.
What a fleeting, intangible, evanes
cent and altogether delicious thing a kiss
isl No savant can analyze it. The
genius that fathoms star spaces cannot
measure it; the science that weighs the
fraction of an atom cannot determine its
specific gravity. And yet what an im
portant part it has played in history as
well as in romance. It has been "the re
ward of genius for was not Voltaire
publicly kissed in the stage box by the
beautiful Duchess de Villars in compli
ance with the demands of an enthusias
tic fit to thua reward the author of
iterope?' "
It has been the bribe of politics, for
when Fox was contesting the hard won
seat at Westminster the beautiful Duch-,
ess of Devonshire offered to kiss all who '
would vote for the great statesman. And
the inspiration of patriotism, for did not
the fair Lady Gordon turn recruiting
sergeant when the ranks of the Scottish
regiments had been depleted by Sala
manca, and tempted the gallant lads by
placing the recruiting shilling between
her lips for all who would to take it with
their own? New York San. .

He rubbed some of this snake water on

make the liquid more powerful, by put

dropped into the water. By putting
some of the solution thus obtained into,
his mouth he could breathe fire, and by
placing some of it in his eyes he could
see in the dark. . . ,
