The little building in Brougham ter
race, Liverpool, in which the few Mos
lem worshipers thereabout gather to
gether for prayer and to listen to ser
mons in Arabic, and English is hidden
away in a garden, and it does not seem
that its congregation has ever done any
thing to give offense, yet for "more than
a month past they have been exposed to
persecution, and the ferment appears to
be increasing. On a recent Sunday, ac
cording to a local report, the appearance
of the "Muezzin" in the balcony to give
the customary " Azan," or call to prayer,
was the signal for a great uproar from a
crowd of some 400 roughs, indulging in
the usual oaths and execrations and
throwing of stones and filth.
Several times, it is stated, the Muezzin
was struck. After he had retired the
disturbers burst into the mosque and
threw stones, one of which fell within a
few inches of where the little son of
Ahmed Quiliam Bey' waa kneeling in
prayer. These annoyances, it is added,
continued during the service, and the
congregation on leaving were pelted and
struck. London Public Opinion.
Calendar Crutailers.
The calendars for 1S92 ere beginning
to put in an appearance, and the calen
dar fiends are also hard at work.: "I've
bad about 500 applications for calendars
this week," said an insurance man yes
terday, "and some of the calendar beg
gars are very impudent in" their de
mands. Women are the most cheeky
applicants wo have to deal with. One
woman today requested me to give her
one of each kind issued by our office,
and I granted hor demand, bnt she came
back in half an hour and asked me to
duplicato her haul in order to please a
female acquaintance who could not come
herself. I gave her a blotter and told
. her to blot herself out of existence. It
wa3 ungallant, of course, but 1 wasn't
fa the humor to deal otherwise with her.
. Slips That Always Kuise a Sugh.
To few of ua is it given never to make
a slip of the tongue. On the contrary,
most peoplo li.ive some unpleasant mem
ory or other of somu dreadf ul mistake
they have fallen into, and even although
years may have passed since the fatal
moment when their lips betrayed them,
they rro still unable to recall the cir
cumstances without :tgain experiencing
the asony and their cheeks displaying
the blush which followed upon the first '
discovery of tlia slip. Take a few exam
rples to illustrate what we have ad-
vanced. It was but a very small and
even insiguinuant change of a letter
which rather spoiled Hie impressive elo-
audience against idolatry, in place of
"Cow iut thy ltuoe U an idol," made a
false step aud said. 'Bow not thine eye
to a needle."

Much the same was the pitfall into

A good soul in Ohio absolutely wor
ships Dickens, even going so far as burn
ing a candle before his portrait. She
reads nothing but Dickens, and when he
came here to read she wrote to inquire
whether he'd visit the west. Receiving
a reply in Dickens own handwriting,
her joy knew no bounds. Her hero could
not leave the east, therefore she deter
mined to go to New York.
Jones, the v h usband, demurred, but
upon being wakened one night with the
threat that if he did not give her money
to travel like a Christian, she would
walk, Jones succumbed. Mrs. Jones
went to New York, had a private inter
view with Dickens, attended his read
ings, and returned home more rabid than
ever.
" When the news came of Dickens'
death Mra. Jones was inconsolable. Not
long after Mrs. Jones' sister died, but
owing to the illness of this sister's hus
band, whom she wa3 obliged to nurse.
Mrs. Jones could not attend the funeral.
"When the rest of her family returned
they found Sirs; Jones reading "Pick
wick" to the sick and bereaved man. As
a relative approached the bed, Mrs.
Jones burst into tears, exclaiminer: "The
saddest ' part of it all is to think that
dear Sarah died before 1 had finished
reading 'Martin Chuzzlewit' to her; and
now shell never, never know how it
ends! Oh, it's too bad!" Kate Field's
