One of the most interesting characters in American history is General Zachary Taylor, "Old Bough and Beady," hero of Buena Vista, father-in-law of Jefferson Davis and twelfth president of the United States. We all recollect how Daniel Webster sneered at him, before he was nominated, as a "backwoods colonel," .and refused to let his friends pnt him on the ticket for rice president with Taylor for first place, thereby missing his last -and, as the sequel showed, best chance of becoaiinjj president. Millard Fill more, of New York, took the despised second place and thereby had nearly three years in the , White House. General Sherman used to tell an amus inir little storv of Tavlor anent his nomi nation for the presidency. At that time General Taylor was stationed at New Or Kimtnekian and the Kentnckians were very properly proud of turn. "Why. we do all your old neigh bors." t "Well, then, if that's the case," replied the old hero, without changing the ex pression of his face, "I reckon Til have to run." Detroit Free Press.
