It is said there is another prospect
of a fight between Argentine and Chile.
Anything to warm things up.
In the Texas house of representatives
on the 28th, Mr. Hamburger introduced
a concurrent resolution requestingTexaa
congressmen to oppose the Nicaragua
canal bcheme and to formulate a kill for
a canal from tho Gulf of Mexico to the
Pacific, to be constructed by the United
States government. Governor Hogg
recommends such a 'canal " iu his message.
The orchards of Oregon are worth
looking after. The state has thirty-six
nurseries covering about 1,576 acres and
containing about 9,000,000 young trees,
and orchardists have upward of 100,000
cres of growing trees. One-half of this
acreage is in prnnce, one-fourth in aD-
plea, one-tenth in pears and the remain
ler in various kinds of fruits.
Col. Pope's roacf-improvement plans
takeshnpe in the proposal for a paved
roadway from New York to Chicago.
No doubt Chicaeoans will subscribe lib
erally, feeling it to be missionary work
to help easterners on wheels to get
there. When an asphalt road thirty
feet wide has been built from New York
to Chicago for the benefit of cyclists and
couriers, railroad tracks will be at a disr
count as promenades, and perhaps farm-
era will realize that it is a far better in-!
vestment to 6ink monev in roads than
wagons in mud.

There has recently been on the part
of the anti-silver democrats in coceress
a strong effort to prepare the way for
legislation at this session involving the
.repeal of the silver-purchase clause
of ths Sherman law of 1890. It does
not appear, that the effort will b suc
cessful, and the question of currency
legislation' in its entirety will probably
ro over to the new congress. The onlv
important legislation, aside from the
passage of the appropriation bills
likely to be enacted at this session are
measures dealing with immigration and
the quarantine laws.

The trial of the Eoslyn bank robbers
began yesterday in Ellensbnrgb. Cal
Hale was the first one. put on trial. F.
A.. Aberuethy, the cashier, positively
identified Hale as the man who took the
money from the vault. Dr. Lvons and
Prof. Jenkins alsp positively . identified
hiru as the robber who handled the
money. The defense failed to tangle
them up or shake their.testimony in the
least. About fifty witnesses have ar
rived from Oregon to testify for the de
fense, and it is understood a strong effort
will be made to prove an alibi. Hale
has local attorneys conducting his case,
assisted by one attorney from Oregon
Prosecuting Attorney Wager is being
assisted by H. J. Snively. The indica
tions are the trial will last several days,
possibly all the wesk. Great interest is
being shown in tho case, and some
.heavy legal fighting is expected as the
trial progresses.

- Since writing an article which appears
elsewhere the bug bill measure has been
defeated in thehouse. This was Coon's
bill appropriating $6,000 to the state
board of horticulture and enlarging its
discretionary powers in the wav of de
stroying diseased trees and shrubs. Up
ton, wanted his own bill to pass. Coon's,
he said, would cause three-fourths of the
orchards in the state to be dug up and
burned. Ormsby said: "Tho eastern
trees sent in here are all diseased, and it
is the best thing for the orchardists if
their diseased trees are dug up. When
ever there is any measure introduced
here that will be of some benefit to the
state, it has to be jumped on- by theee
wonld-be reformers and killed." Ford
. declared the bill gives one man discre
tionary power to destroy any orchard,
charge $5 a day while doing it, bo "paid
out of the county treasury, and the
amount to be a lien upon the land'
"We ought," he said, "to pass a bill to
protect our farmers from these horti
cultural fellows." He moved to indefi
nitely postpone, but the motion was
lost. Geer, the taller, then took the
floor, saying:' "Oregon has always been
famed for her fair women and' red apples.
The first we till have with us, and I
hope always shall have, but the red ar
pies, or at least, Bound apples, .are no
longer with"u3. The best thing for oar
orchards today would be for 90 per cent,
of tbetn to be grubbed up. California
lias made her fruit the wonder of the
world by appropriating liberally for de
stroy ing fruit pests. The difference be
tween them and us is that when we find
anything good, if it costs a dollar and six
fiits, we vote it down." McEwan briefly
opposed the bill, as be preferred Upton's.
So the bill went to vote. The roll-call
showed SO ayes and 22 noes, thus defeat-
-4iig the measure by -I vote.
