Tho other day i well dressed man sat
In a Boulevard car going up town. The
day was cold, the car was fall and the
nsnal discomforts of surface transit
were 'turned on. The man mentioned
was the observed of all observers. He
carried a common black muff on his
knee, his liands thrust in either end, and
had a far away look in his eyes. The
ladies exchanged amused glances. The
gentlemen regarded the inuff with vari
ous degTeea of wonder and contempt.
"Newest style." suggested one gentle
man to another.
"Yes: it's going to be a cold day to
morrow. When you see the pigs carry
ing straws"
"That beats me:" came in a stage
whisper from across the way.
"Wonder if he wears corsets," said
another.
"What is it. anyhow?"
"Sorry I forgot my muff."
"I'll steal my wife's sealskin sacque to
night." "Poor fellow! Somebody ought to see
him home safely."
Amid these remarks the man with the
inulF njit quietly looking out of the win
dow. He must have overheaii some of
them; he must have known that he was
the object of universal curiosity and
ridicule, but he gave no sign. It ap
peared, however, that he was only col
lecting himself for some final effort, for
when he arose to leave the car at Seventy-second
street ho suddenly confront
ed his fellow passengers.
"This is my wife's muff," he said
bluntly. "She left it on the bargain
counter. I had to go back and get it.
I'm taking it home. If you seo anything
funny in that I'm blamed if I do."

He Had Ouufjl't the Idea.
The teacher is suspicious of the influ
ence that the new boy in school seems
likely to exert over the rest of the class,
and not without some reason.
She had been explaining how aquatic
birds are provided with boatlike bodies
so as to enable them to swim easily, and
was testing the results of her efforts to
impress the fact in the minds of her pu
pils. "Now," she said, -who can tell me
why the duck's body is formed as it is?"
- "1 kin," said the new boy, holding up
his hand.
"Very well: you may give the reason."
"So's to have 'er all shipshape. "-

A Carious Fungus.
The department of agriculture at
Washington has received from Consul
Jones, located at Chin Kiang, China, a
small bottle containing specimens of a
curious fungus that actually grows from
a species of caterpillar. Unlikely as it
may seem, this fnngus literally trans
forms the caterpillar into a vegetable,
making tho unhappy insect serve -ihe
purpose of a root. The caterpillar itself
is the larva of a moth peculiar to China
and Japan. When tho cold of winter
approaches, this moth bores a hole in
the ground to a depth of three to seven
inches and curls himself up to wait for
spring.
While taking his winter sleep he is
often attacked by a remarkable disease,
which causes him to send forth shoots
like a sprouting vegetable. Those shoots
appear and fructify above the ground
like any other species of mushroom.
This remarkable animal vegetable has
no other means of growth than the curi
ous ono above described. St. Louis Re
public. A Study of Kyes.
A story is told of the courtship of the
late Sir GiJrg Airy, the famous astron
omor. JSrreason of his timidity, he
seemed doomed to bo a bachelor for life.
But fortune favored him and he drifted
into matrimony in an unexpected way.
An intimate friend remarked to him one
day: "Have yon ever observed Miss
?s eyes? They have the property of
doable refraction." "Dear me, that is
very odd," he exclaimed; "I should like
to see that. Do you think I might ven
ture to call?" And call he did, and
bogged permission to examine the young
lady's eyes.
The novelty of the situation may have
fascinated him. At any rate .he begged
the privilege of a second look at the
eyes in a clear light; tho problem grew
so interesting that he at length came to
tho conclusion to make it a life study.
Tho boldness born of scientific curiosity
enabled him ultimately to propose. He
was accepted, and the strange courtship
ended in a happy marriage. London
