THE CHROX-
WANT TO JOIN THE UNION.
Uncle Sam seems to have been nat
urally first choice with the provisional
government of the Sandwich islands.
Chas. L. Carter, one of the annexation
commissioners was interviewed while in
San Francisco, on Saturday, and he
-stated the object of the visit to Washing
ton is "to have the United States take
possession of the Hawaiian islands. We
want to join the union," said he, "not
m a state, however, but under a terri
torial or district form of government. A
government like that of the District of
Columbia, with the addition of a gov
ernor appointed by the president, is
preferable for many reasons. There is
anch a largo number of Chinese and
other objectionable elements of good
government on the islands who cannot
be trusted to vote intelligently that if
wniversal suffrage is declared the whites,
who represent almost the entire business
interests of the country, would be out
voted and powerless. An entire new
system of government must be built np,
and the only way to do it is to have the
United States take charge. It must
come to this or the whites must leave
the islands. Their intereets are too
great, however, for them to give up with
out a straggle.
Evidently the time has arrived when
the United States (if we want the is
lands), can have them, and on terms
more favorable than ever before offered,
or will ever be offered again. All Amer
icans on the island are a unit for annexa
tion, and the new provisional govern
ment and its aims are supported by
nearly all the English there and all of
the Germans. The foreign interests in
Hawaii amount to about $40,000,000,
$30,000,000 of which is in the hands -of
the Americans. Honolulu is as much an
American city as San Francisco itself.
King Kalakua was greatly favorable to
annexation to the United States, and so
was Queen Emma, but for some reaeon
Queen Liliu kaulani is strongly in favor
of British rule, and Jf allowed would no
doubt, apply to Great Britain for pro
tection." England is represented on
the inland by Commissioner J. H. W'ood
faouse. He, in common with the other
representatives, was notified of the
change in the government, but returned
.so answer to the communication. He
may hare changed hia mind by this
time, the natives themselves, as a rule,
re not in favor of her plans. She is
supported by a clique of about twenty
who are anxious for political power.
She is jealous of the power of the whites,
and is an ambitious, scheming woman.
She enjoyed an income of between $75,
000 and $100,000, with no responsibility
But she undertook to mix in politics,
and got the worst of it." As Mr. Wilder
ays: "If Queen Liliu kanlani ad
been allowed to carry out her plans, she
would have become the absolute despot
of the islands. No whites would have
been allowed to vote, the house of nobles
would have been abolished, the supreme
court judges who are now appointed for
life would be appointed for a six-year
term only, and would have been subject
to dismissal at her whim. Hawaiians,
as a rule, are a simple, peaceful and in
Solent people, and would probably make
no trouble if let alone. Thev are easily
influenced by politicians, and were con
vinced by the queen that she was acting
in meir interests.
Before the act to restrict immigration
can be made operative attempts are
made by Atlantic transportation corpor
at ion s to have it annulled. Self-sup
porting immigrants that come to this
country to become citizens and to cher
sen a patriotic interest in the country
nre still needed and will be welcomed in
America. But we have had too many of
the other kind, and the further immi
gration of the undesirable element must
bo stopped at once. However much we
owe to the needy and oppressed of other
' lands, it is our duty to our own country.
for the fulfillment of our national des
tiny among nations, and for the sake of
posterity, that we protect our own
national life. The important question
is not wnat tangnage tne incomers
peak or what their manners and cue
torn s are, but whether they will stand
on their own feet and do their part in
tne wort or mating a nation.
It is plain to everybody now that it is
a fight to the death between the Great
Northern and the Northern Pacific com
panies in which the other companies are
playing only' minor parts, with, an aver
age indebtedness of $60,000 per mile for
the Northern aa against (15,000 per mile
in- favor cf the-Great Northern. The
forcing of the Northern Pacific into the
hands of a receiver would, of course,
SC-.'tire the bonds of the latter and so the
lock that depreciate President Hill and
his coadjutors would be enabled to cap
tire this great property. Jim Hill begau
