It is reported that Bishop Brook a
died without making a will. . Estimates
place the estate at $750,000.
The price of wheat still remains at a
diacoaragingly low figure, regardless of
. the fact that there has been a change in
the political complexion of the country.
It is pretty nearly decided that Hon.
Thomas F. Bayard will be Cleveland's
Secretary of tate, Senator Carlisle sec
.retary of the treasury, and Lamont sec
retary of the navv.
A Jndon dispatch to the Exchange

Blatchford and Field, of the supreme

A. Vienna dispatch says all hope of
rescuing the men entombed in fort
Schinitt mine at Dux, Bohemia, has
been abandoned. - Thirteen men are
known to be in the mine, and" it is gen
erally conceded that those not killed by
the explosion, were afterwards suffocated
by damp.
The Review takes exceptions to the
joint resolution of Senator Walcott. of
Colorado, about the Colombo shin-plasters.
The new Columbian stamps have
"caught on." The public had grown
rather weary of licking a portrait gal
lery, and the new designs, new in shape
and also in scene and incident; are a
decided relifef. -
Senator Carlisle's resignation confirms
the general report that he will go into
the Cleveland cabinet as t ecretary of the
treasury. This has already excited the
ire of a 'number of democratic news
papers of pronounced anti-silver views.
The Boston Herald quotes Carlisle's
record, and declares that he is "almost
as rapid a silver lunatic as Bland."
Barney, pop., yesterday introduced in
the Nebraska house a resolution to 'im
peach the governor for' malfeasance in
office, by reason of his having approved
the bond of the collapsed Capital
National bank of Topeka, given to the
state, under the law requiring banks to
give bonds for security to the state of the
money deposited with them. The reso
lution was laid over one day, under the
rales.
The press ot Oregon , says the Union
Journal of Walla Walla, are learning
from her younger though bigger sister,
Washington. They are strongly advo
cating the fixing of salaries for all county
and state officials, and discarding the
fee system. . The Oregonian even, gen
erally the last to get on the right side of
problems in economics, protests against
recompensing officers with fees, and
claims that Multnomah county would
save $30,000 or more a year by paying
officers of the county liberal salaries in
j.olace of the present system.-
Mr. G. V. McCoy -of Portland, who

the Cascade mountains free. He argues
