The Quickest VFay to Cure a Cold.
Do yon wish to know the quickest way
to cure a cold? We will tell you. To
cure a cold quickly, It must be treated
before the cold has become settled in the
system. The first .ayxuptoms of a cold
is a drv, loud cough and sneezing.' .The'
cough "is soon fol lowed by watery ex
pectoration and the sneezing by a pro
fuse watery discharge from the nose. In
severe cases there is. a thin white coating
on the tongue. What to do? It is only
necessary to take Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy in double does every hour.
That will greatly lessen the severity of
the cold and in many cases will effectu-'
ally counteract it, and cure what would
have been a severe eold within one or
two days time. Try it and be convinced
25 and 50 cent "bottles for eale by

Wnnta m Companion This Year.
The "Hennit of the Sounblick," Peter
Lechner, who last year passed the win-
tor months in the observatory on the
summit of that lonely peak, now de
clares that he will not stay there an
other winter unless " he has a companion
with him. Ho would, he says, prefer a
wife, if he could find ono. Otherwise
he will be content with a male . compan
ion, who could take turns with him in
his constant 'task of reading the scien
tific instruments. This decision on the
part of the "Hermit of the Sonnblick''
really threatens the further existence or
the highest observatory in Enrope. . For
the Austrian Meteorological institute
lacks the funds to support a companion
for Lechner. and the small sum, about
100 a year, that is wanted for the pur
pose is not . forthcoming from private
sources.
It is believed that the real explanation
of the discontent of Herr Lechner is that
he is annoyed at being forgotten by the
public, who have neither sent him
Christmas presents nor published lauda
tory paragraphs about him in the news
papers or late, lnree years oacs ue
said he wanted a wife, anu . Hundreds oi
offers at once poured in from .all quar
ters, including several rich and many
good looking women, but he then
laughed at the idea, and continued to
prefer the state of single blessedness. It
would be a distinct loss to meteorologi
cal and physical science if the Sonnblick
observatory were to be .cloevd. but some
means will probably be found of recon
ciling Herr Peter to his lonely but lofty
labors for another winter. Vienna Cor.

Tltli immI the Irle of Grain.
The difference between the method ot
paying the clergy of the Church of Eng
land, who receive the tithe as their liv
ing, and the clergy of the Church of
Scotland, who enjoy what are known in
the north as tiends, will be very appar
ent in this vcar. On both sides of the
Tweed grain prices are higher for the
year, bnt in England the clergy will re
ceive little immotliate benefit from the
nse, because py tne seven years average
it is spread over so long" a time" that the
most that can be hopea tor rrom tne
good prices of 1891 is to stop tho fall
which has been going on every year
without a break since 1878,. a longer
period of successive annual declines in
the value of the tithe than has ever be-,
fore occurred.
But in Scotland the tiend is calculated
on the grain prices of each year, so that
tho parish ministers who have endured
the discomforts which low prices brought
with them when grain wiia cheap will
now have directly the advantages of J
higher prices when grain has risen. In
England bota the nse and the fall are
retarded by the seven years average.
In Scotland the full effects of either the
one or the other are directly experienced
in pwv veir. London CJraphic.
A Tree Climbing; Pig-
A curiosity has lately been shot by Mr.
Le Mortemore, who has a selection on
Tinana creek, Queensland. He says it
is a sort of tree climbing pig. . For a
number of years the wild pigs have been
numerous in this locality, and bis theory
is that the original or common pig must
have amalgamated to a certain extent
with some aboriginal animal, or that the
necessities of climate, etc., have caused
the variety. The captured animal weighs
about 100 pounds, and is pretty fat, wih
bristly brown fur, small black spots,
snout and ears like a pig, but the jaw is
furnished with front teeth like a rodent;
it has large canines and powerful back
grinders. . '
The fore feet are furnished with hook
like claws; the hind ones have two hook
claws on each hoof. The tail is thick,
about a foot long, and highly prehensile,
and in a state of rest is usually carried
in what is known as a Flemish coil. The
animal is also furnished with a pouch,
which it only appears to use for carrying1
a supply of food ifi while it is traveling
to fresh pastures. The skin is saved and
will be sent to the Maryborough exhi
bition. Mr. Le Mortemore says the flesh
is excellent, and that it tastes just like
veal and ham pie. He is sure there are
nienty more about by the marks on the
trees, in drought the animal climbs
trees and hangs by its tail while it gath
ers its food by the hook claws. He in
tends capturing some live specimens and
breeding from them, Pall, Mall Budget.
