to proceed to order and construct a
sewer of eight inch terra cotta pipe
through block 9 in Laughlin's addition
to Dalles city, ' beginning at the center
of Jefferson 6treet opposite the east end
of the alley through the center of said
block and thence westerly following - the
centre of said alley and continuing to
intersect the 6ewer in Laughlin street,
and that the cost of such sewer will be
assessed against the property directly
benefited thereby as by the charter pro

ior sale at punuc auction, to tne highest bidder,
all of the lots and parts of lots situated in
Gates Addition to Dalles City, Wa'co county,
uregon, not neretoiore sola, as previously aaver
tised. Each of said lots will be sold upon the lot
respectively and none of them shall be sold for
a less sum than the value thereof as above
stated. -
One fourth of the price bid on any of said lota
shall be paid in cash at the time of sale, end the
remainder in two equal payments on or before
one and two years from the date of such sale,
respectively, with interest on such deferied pay
ments at the rate of ten per cent, per annum,
oavable annuallv. Provided that navment mav
be made in full at the time of such' sale at the

trio of trees ho saw in a box 134 inches
broad, 4 inches long and 3 inches deep,
for which the owner asked the traveler
the modest sum of $500. The throe deni

pinet all perfectly formed and seemingly

Hasn't Been Shaved Since Appomattox.
"Have a shave, sir?" said the new
barber.
"What?"
"Have a shave, sir?" he repeated.
"No, sir; havent shaved since I860."
The men in the chairs snickered and
moved their heads to get a glance of the
old gentleman as be clinched onto the
bootblack's perch. The o. g. was not a
bit reluctant to talk.
"No, sin haven't shaved since 1860,"
he went on. "Swore 1 wouldn't if Lee
was whipped."
The old gentleman was the pioneer
physician. Dr. L M. Ridge, and he de
clared he would wear. his long beard to

Queer Effect of the Moon.
. There is a lady now living in Alle
ghany who suffers " intense pain in the
head whenever the light of the full
moon falls upon her. At these times she
does not venture out at night, but shuts
herself up in a dark room. . There are

Mo Excuse for X.ate Hoars.
There- would seem to be no excuse for
the late hours which society prescribes
for its ceremonies. Late evening par
ties for children are admitted to be in
jurious. But we are all children or
ought to be, so far as the laws of health
are concerned. We do not, as many
.think,'' by age earn a right to violate the
laws of health. Nature takes pay for it
in one way or another.
One difficulty at the foundation of our
social life is that we do not admit
amusements as necessary to our lives.
We do not set apart time, for them, but
insist, if forced into them by fashion,
upon taking them out of time that ought
to be given to rest of mind and body.
The day must all be given to business,
up to its latest available hour, and then
we take from hours that should be given
to sleep time for social duties. New

Glacier lee.
Glacier ice . is not like the solid blue
ice on the surface of the water, but con
sists of grannies joined together by an
intricate network of capillary water
filled fissures. In exposed sections and
upon the surface of the ice can be ob
served "veined" or "banded" structure
veins of a denser blue color alternating
with those of a lighter shade containing
air bubbles. The cause of this peculiar
structure has been the subject of much
theorizing among investigators, hut
hitherto .the greatest authorities con
sider that the explanation of the phe
