The revolutionary war which has been
hanging oyer the Mexican border has
ceased to be visible. Jt is now reported,
with some aspect of credulity, that the
movement was merely a grand smug
gling expedition, and was instituted to
distract the attention of officials from
the real operations.
Honeyman, DeHart & Co., of Port
land, owners of the Rogue river valley
railroad, have leased the road between
Jacksonville and Medford to W. S. Bar
num. The lessee pays $8 perday for
the road, and has Riven $20,000 bonds
for the faithful performance of the ser
vice. The contract begins on Friday.
The plan of blowing up the ice gorge
at the Cincinnati railroad bridge by
dynamite was temporarily abandoned
Saturday as dangerous. A sudden rush
of ice was feared. Negotiations are be
ing made to have the ice. split np by
tow boats. Reports from the lower
river regions indicate that ranch damage
has been done in the last twenty-four
hours. A coal train containing 200 tons
arrived yesterday. It will be sold to the
poor today. The bankers and insurance
men met, and about $4,000 was sub
scribed for the poor.
Hits the nail on the head
one of Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pel
lets. They do the right thing in the
right way. They cleanse and regu-
ate the liver, stomach ana Doweis
thoroughly, "and effectively, but
mildly and gently. J. hey persuaae,
rather' than force. One tiny, sugar-
coated Pellet's a gentle laxative ;
three to four act as a cathartic.
They're the smallest, but the best.
There's less to take, but there's
more crood in it, when it's taken.
Thev're the original Little Liver
Pill, and they've never been equaled.
Sick Headache, .Bilious Headache,
Constipation, Indigestion, Bilious
Attacks, and all derangements of
the liver, stomach aind bowels, are
prevented, relieved, and cured.
Thev're the cheapest pill you can
buy, because they're guaranteed to
give satisfaction, or your money is
returned.
On starting from Iowa in 1846 for
Oregon, .Henderson Lewelling planted
some hickory nuts in a box, and they
sprouted while on the way, and were
transplanted to a corner of what is now
block fifteen, in Milwaukie. There the
pioneer hickory tree stood until last
September, when , it was felled to clear
the way for the electric railway line
from Portland to Oregon city. A mallet
fashioned from its wood was presented
to the state horticultural eociety by
Seth Lewelling as an enduring souvenir
of the first nurserv on the Pacific coast.
A pretty mess is brewing between the
S. P. R. and the traffic association
Commissioner Blanchard has issued
circular announcing "the action of the
central traffic association lines in the
matter of rates, on transcontinental
traffic. The actidh is a point-blank re
fusal to participate in the rates proposed
by the S. P. R. on certain commodities
from California to the east, and the S
P. R. is notified that the lines in the
central traffic and trunk line aaaocia
tions will continue to demand, on the
commodities named their fuH--propor;
tions of the rates quoted in the last
transcontinental tariffs.
The Torrey bankrupt bill, which is
good measure and one badly needed
may become a law at this session of
congress. It is in the interest of honest
insolvents, and business men all over
the country welcome its adoption. It
will make more secure the property
rights of the whole people and release
hundreds of thousands of earnest, honest
'men from the hopeless bondage of debt
It will bring about uniform bankrupt
laws and lessen commercial failures.
has strong support, being much simpler
and more direct than the present laws on
bankruptcy.
In Mr. Ladd's will he gave the sum of
$450,000 in trust to be invested in rev'
enue-producing property, either real or
personal or both, and shall be kept so
invested, for educational or charitable
uses, or both, for the benefit of the peo
pie of the state of Oregon, or the peopl
of the city of Portland, Or., or of both
In the selection of the beneficiaries, the
will says, "I suggest, but do not direct
and will here indicate only an asylum or
home for old and indigent ladies to be
established in the city of Portland, Or.
in addition to the institutions which
have already indicated as proper bene
ficiaries of this bequest at their discre
tion."
W. W. Sanders, who is serving out
life sentence in the Oregon penitentiary
in a letter to the Corvallis Gazette says
"When a convict comes here he Barren
lers to the law for the time being his

machine, under the ' absolute govern
ment and control of his superiors. This

routine of march from cell to work

and on in the same dreary ' monotony.
