FRASER, -AT THE St. Louis elevators are reported full to the roofs with trral, and 1,500 loaded cars are on . the - sidetracks for which there is no storage capacity.' Some roads are refusing further shipments on thia account. The cause of the blockade is the early marketing of grain by farm ers, and theilight export and shipping demand. ' They are to stop flogging female con victs in Siberia. Who would ever have expected that part of the world to move? After awhile Russia .will become as civilized as Dahomey. Female prison ers may escape the lash hereafter that semi-starvation may be em ployed to bring them to a submissive mind. Great is Muscovite civilization. It begins to look as if the Southern Orezon nickel mines were to pay. This season 3,000,000 brick will be used in construction of the works, 15,000 feet of wire cable will be needed to carry ore from the ledee to the top of the hill to the reduction works at the base. Sap enntendent Brown has forty men em ployed and good roads are to be built from the plant to Kiddle station, four miles distant. ' The San Joan river, the scene of the present search for gold, rises in the San Juan mountains, in Colorado; runs Bouthwestward into New Mexico, and empties into the Colorado river in Utah The old California excitement of 1850 has almpBt been renewed. Thus far the speculators and provision dealers only have reaped a harvest. Used Up. It's the only way to use some things, but it's a bad condition for a man or woman. It means disease. Take Dr. Pierce's Golden , Medical Discovery. That means health. It invig orates the liver and kidneys, purifies the blood and cleanses and renews the whole system. 'For all scrofulous humors and blood - taints, and even con sumption (or lung-scrofula), if taken in time, it's a positive remedy. It's a gtfaranteed one. In all diseases of the liver, blood and lungs, it's warranted to benefit or cure, or the money is refunded. No other medicine of its class is sold, through druggists, on this pe culiar plan. In the Montana contest yesterday the bal lot resulted the same as on Wednesday, except that Beecher, populist, voted for Mulville, populist, instead of Hauser, democrat. Kansas is safe. ' Those who have given the re-organization of the senate for the 53d congress to the dem ocrats may yet perhaps, change their views. The G. O. P. "still lives." The firm action of the republicans at. Topeka yesterday, will probably secure the election of a republican United States senator in Kansas. This was brought about by the grasping desire of the populists to control everything. They wanted to throw out three repub lican postmasters elected, and. substitute populists. This would give the popu lists a clear majority, and, of course, the republicans would not give in, so the conference adjourned. Other confer ences were held, but without result, and finally, like the cfog and the piece of meat crossing a stream, they let the senator drop to catch at the shadow of a passing hope which barely told its flat tering tale. - The Annual Ball of the Dalles City Fire Dep't Etc.,v Etc., Etc. "Senator Myers of Linn county, has introduced a road bill which provides for the building of roads by money de rived from direct taxation, to be levied by county courts, and expended in the county where the levy is raised. He has confidence that the measure, if it becomes a law, will be a great improve ment on the present slipshod method of road-making. The bill creates the office of supervisor, who is to expend the fund in conjunction with the advice of the county court. For all repairs of new work not exceeding $50, his personal judgment is supreme, but for larger con tracts he must advertise for . bids, and award the contracts after consultation with the county court. There is to be a " poll-tax of $2 on all males between the ages of twenty-one and forty-five years, which may be paid in work. Bridge work is to come in under the road law. the Dalles AND . SPOOL SILK r: FINE People of sense and people of taste will be grieved to learn that there is a tendency among the modietes of London and Paris to return to the crinoline and hoop, as parts" of fashionable attire of. womankind. In London the movement is so formidable that societies have" been organized to combat it, and the press has hurried to assist. ' No wonder. Hoop-skirts again. It .is enough to make the muses grow hysterical with commingled rage and mirth. The fem inine attire of today is . tasteful, decent nd artistic. " It "amply" serves its ends and is grateful to the eye, and the dress - makers propose to exchange it for that " incomparably and flawlessly, ugly in ' vention of Bartorial art, the hoop-skirt. The older generation remember this contrivance with a feeling of horror; and the younger generation, viewing it as pictured in the pages of old magazines, discovers that the balloon-like garments of the '60s were no whit more gainly or attractive than the humps on a drome dary. A civilized age won't have it. The world has outgrown the practices of the inquisition, the burning of witches, slave-trading, nose rings, and hoops.
