DI VISION 0?KA .VSA S.
It appears- that the movement looking
to the tormina: of a new state out of the
wee'e.'a portion of Kansas is earnest
Hvch a divis-'pn is urged by its promoters
on the ground t hai, the western half of tne
state is pool and its people are borrowing
fa toe's. It is aseerled that the populist
tendency of the btate operates to prevent
the loaning of money and that the far
mers Who are in debt are unable to meet
the demands made upon them. It is
also, poiut-d out that the western portion
of the state gave a rousing republican
liiaio- ity at. the November election and
the two euds ot Kansas are not in love
with euch other anyway. To the people
of the United States outs'de of the bor
ders of the state there wou'S be one ob-r
jt tt.jii to two stat" Ptjverrments ruling
iu the present leoruv.ry of Kansas. Two
more members would sit in the senate
of t6 United States, and, with mani
festly less behind theui of local or na
tion mi ta. eats, would neutralize tbe sen
atorial leprc0"-'. V "on of some such state
as ew Vork. 1 oiv- ivnia or Illinois.

Eastern Kansas has for the last four
years lool ed UDon the wesieru ba'X of

west, as now st ems nroiuble, there is

Taking everything into consideration
the wo.ider is that that there a.-e ro:

would make a real success of it now-a-days
must be a good business man. Be
sides buying and selbpg and the em
ployment of labor there a-e tbe planting-,
cul' iviilin and ha vesting of the c-'ops,
the selec:ion, breeding, mating, feeding
and cae ot live stock, the use of ma-,
chineiy, and a hnndrd other important
things that, rcouire intelligence, skill
and executive abjlity of a high order.
There are a thousand little deiails of the
business to lie ca.e.ully looked after to
make the ram-h do its liest. '
The fact of Gould's death was known
before the opening of the New York
Block exchange yesterday. The effect
on the ma ket was less marked than ex
pected. Missouri Pacific declined only
19 to 54; Western Union only to 85;
Manhattan Elevated, to 128; Union
Pacific. . 2 -to 35?. These are known
particularly as (iould's properties, to
which he paid spec'al attentiqu. On
the London board theie was practically
no marked effect Union Pacific de
clined fraci-ioiial'v, but immediately re
covered. Secretary Foster says be does
not believe the death of Gould will have
any appreciable effect on the finances of
the country, as his son George may be
depended on to pursue a safe, conserva
tive policy.
-Lieut. Peary is reported as declaring
(that he can find the north 'pole if tire
government will give him time to do it.
If the gallant lieutenant can suggest
what he or th government can do with
the north pole after he has found it, he
may be given lirjeny, to mane tne at
tempt. Trips to the arctic regions are
interesting for tie tales of adventu -e
they develop, but secretary' Tracy ap
pears to be of the opinion these are not
essential to the welfare and happiness of
mankind in this latitude. Lieut. Peary
will try our climate for a while at least.
Blaine's present illness demonstrates
anew that his lucky star was in the as
cendant at Minneapolis. The defeat
which overtook Harricon woald have
killed Blaine had he been the nominee,
and his nomination could not have
averted the tidal ' wave of democratic-
victorv.
There is no accounting for the strange
