No Ground Far Complaint.
- We understand that several of- our
people, delayed giving their orders until
this week, and now find their orders willf
not be accepted at headquarters as the
offer for Oregon City has been with,
drawn. Some of these are now con
demning the Oregonian for thus cutting
off their offer before all had an opportu
nity of taking advantage of it. Of course
it is a great disappointment to find them
selves a day too late, but we are of the
opinion that in this matter, there is no
ground for complaint against the Orego
nian as they were certainly explicit
enough in announcing the expiration of
their offer, and those who delayed avail
ling themselves of the onnortnnitv. have
bnly themselves to blame for their dis
appointment. Oregon City Enterprise.

OREGON
SHEEP ANT WOOL.
Some Important Facts Respecting tne
Stock, Quality And Price.
Mr. C. A. Rhea of Heppner, who is
largely interested in sheep raising in
morrow county, iurnisnes tne pu&imxg
facts and figures to the OgCgofSn : i
Morrow county produces more wool
than any county in the state. There are
now about 250,000 sheep herded within
the boundaries of the county which pro-
uucea, at tne last smearing, aDout 3,000
000 pounds of wool. We found a readv
market for the wool at from 9 to 16 cents
per pound. The buyers come right in
to Heppner and take it off our hands,
and then ship it either to eastern cities
or to San Francisco. We get two crops
a year from the sheep, and that makes
it a very -good paying business. The
eheep-in our part of the state are frea
froni all diseases, and are in such a con
dition as to bring a good price anywhere.
The merino sheep is the best " paving
sheep in Oregon, as it is hardy, "and
yields a good crop of wool. For some
time there have been a number of Mon
tana sheep buyers coming into eastern
Oregon and trying to purchase sheep,
offering $3.25 to $3.50 per head for ewes.
The price is a large and tempting one,
but the- sheep-farmers have ho more
sheep than they want, and refuse to part
with them. There is a stip of land about
fifteeen miles in width nil along the
Columbia river that is just adapted to
sheep raising. The grass is green all the
year, and the sheep can feed on it all
winter. The foothills of the Blue Moun
tains also make fine grazing land. The
farmers failed to get a good crop this
year, but they are not a bit discouraged,
and have put in about one-third larger
crop than ever before. If the winter
proves to be a good one they will have
more than an abundance of grain next
year. Business is very good and money
plentiful, and no one in our section of
the country has anything to complain
about. ,
When it comes to wool, Wasco takes
the floor. The Dalles has been the very
best and the biggest wool market in the
United States this year, over 6,500,000
pounds being marketed here at an aver
age price throughout of lo.! to 16
cents per pound. We hope our glory
may not have departed but it is like
Ohio and California "in doubt" today
Wasco did not raise all this wool ;. some
of it came from "Prineville and beyond"
over into Crook county, where we very
much desire to see the promised con
struction of The Dalles Southern rail
way, also somewhat more doubtful now
than were its prospects last month.
-GoocHmutton sheep have sold in this
market this year at $3.75 to $4 per bead,
and good ewes at $5, but it may be said
to be "extremely doubtful" if we secure
such prices after 1892 at any time with
in the next seven or seventeen years.
Gone to California.
Deacon Roberts, long and favorably
known in The Dalles, a sufferer from
rheumatism for the past year and a halK
started to Paso de Robels springs inN
California this morning, accompanied
by Mrs. R., and two sons, in hope that
the .trip may be the means of doing him
some good, although it must be consid
ered doubtful. The old 'gentleman was
carried to the train on a stretcher and
was fixed comfortably in the baggage
car. Mr. Roberts has long been con
nected with the ministry in the Congre
gational church. He was an early mis
sionary to the Sandwich Islands, from
Boston, and one of the most scholarly
men in the missionary service, being a
graduate of Andover.

Troubled, With Ants.
A Springfield, HI.', dispatch says that
Prof. Martin, of the state entomological
bureau, has just finished an investiga

with white ants that the immense store
of official state records are in danger of
being lost. The secretary of state, after
receiving a report from Professor Forbes,
