Z.ate Election News Concluded.
The vote of Indiana is considered more
favorable for Cleveland than Harrison.
At the republican ' headquarters the
state is still claimed, but not with much
show of confidence. The best informa
tion obtainable indicates that the state
has gone democratic 3,000 to 4,000 ; that
the democrats have electttd 10 out of 13
members of congress, a gain of 1 ; and
that the legislature is republican in both
branches.
Tne result in Wisconsin is still in
doubt, both 8 idea claiming the state.
Chairman H. C. Payne, of the republi
can state committee, claims about 10,
000 plurality for Harrison and Spoouer.
Chairman Wall, of the democratic com
mittee, stands by his claim of 12,000 for
Cleveland and Peck.
The Michigan re; lbliean state ticket
is elected. The electoral vote is divided
by the gerrymandered districts. Re
turns to Chairman Breidenthal from 29
counties in Kansas show a fusion major
ity of 9,400. Lata returns at republican
headquarters show a great falling off in
the republican vote and indicate the
election of Lewellin, fusionist, for gov
ernor, and the Weaver electors. The
republican state ticket is probably
elected, and Jerry Simpson is defeated.
A Washington dispatch says Presi
dent Harrison went about his public
duties this morning as if nothing had
happened and seemed the least disturbed
of any body around the White house.
A friend said he would lay down the
cares of office without a single personal
regret. He declined to talk to reporters
. about the result.

It was an avalanche, and the republi
cans have alighted, dismounted, got
down. The figures in the electoral col
lege resemble those of 1860Nrhen the
democracy was put to flight by the re
sult of the election which changed the
administration for the first time in many
years, and bronght on the "irrepressible
conflict," only there will not be any the
scenes of 1860-'61 to follow this election.
The country is too prosperous to sustain
any serious losses because of this sudden
change of administration. As to the
causes of the landslide they are numer
ous, and may generally be traced to the
lack of judgment and the force of cir
cumstances such as "downed" Matt
Quay, froze James G. Blaine out of the
cabinet, and made Steve Elkins and
"Calico" Charley Foster right bowers of
the president.

ination at his office in The Dalles, be
ginning Wednesday, November 9th,
1892, at one o'clock p. m. All teacher
eligible for 6tate certificates, state dis
plomas and life diplomas must make
application at the quarterly examina

The Fence of tlie Future.
There are a number of strong points in
favor of the Tuna Hedge as the fence of
the future, the advantage of this kind of
a fence may be briefly inumerated as
follows : It becomes a perfect barrier
against all kinds of domestic animals
after three years growth ; does not sap
or impoverish the ground, being a strict
ly atmospheric plant, and will not grow'
from the seed or by cutting the roots
hence will not spread, it grows only to a
certain uniform height .and therefore
does not require trimming, it has been
thoroughly and successfully tested in
northern climates and does not kill out
in the winter time, it serves the double
purpose of usefulness and ornamen
tation, as it is an evergreen and blooms
during three months of the year, an in
vitation is extended to thoroughly test
its merits, and every one will be con
vinced that it possesses all the advant
ages claimed for it. Messrs. Johnson &
Payne are now taking orders for the
Tuna Hedge and have met with uniform
success. Any one wishing a living grow
ing fence something that will not spread
and will be a fence for all time to come
should give their orders now and get
their fence started this fall.
W. T. Stead, editor of The Review of
Reviews, has taken up with his accus
tomed vigor the cause of Mrs. Maybrick,
the hapless American woman now lying
in Woking prison because she either did
or did not poison her husband, and the
Enalish lawyers have never been able to
find out whether she did or not. So,
reversing all law and precedent which
hold an accused person innocent until
he has been proved guilty, these brilliant
British judges sent Mrs. Maybrick to
jail. They confessed to having, a preju
dice against her because she had been
gossiped about. That of itself unfitted
them to judge her case, but on the
strength of it they condemned her to
imprisonment for life. Mr, Stead makes
a powerful appeal for the woman in his
magazine. "Ought Mrs. Maybrick to
be Tortured to Death?" is the title. He
says in his paper absolutely that both be
and Sir Charles Russell have received
the deathbed confession of a man in
South Africa Henry Wilson who says
he and a woman whose name is not
given put arsenic in Mr. MaybricVs
medicine during his last illness. If this
is true, then the cruelty and meanness
of so called English justice appears more
vividly than ever. Mr. Stead is right in
Baying that the matter may become a
cause of diplomatic complications with
the United States. The United States
will not see one of its citizens "tortured
to death." Stead says Mrs. Maybrick
will die unless soon released.
