OREGON'S SHOWING
AT CHICAGO
NEXT YEAR
Remains in doubt, but there
is no question about the
TV.rtt.and Industrial Ex- I
position which opens Sep
tember 21st and closes October
22d, being the best Exposition
ever held on the Pacific Coast.
So far as Oregon is concerned
it will be the forerunner of the
Exposition at Chicago in
1893. The principal attrac
tions are the magnificent
American Band of Providence,
R. I. An art collection
valued at $350,000, and em
bracing some of the greatest
pictures owned in the United
States. Immense Horticult
ural and Agricultural exhibits,
the result of the combined
efforts of almost every county
in the state. A mineral ex
hibit exceeding all former
years. A Stock Department
showing tremendous progress
To these are added a larger
number of exhibits than ever
before; including a magnifi
cent electrical display under
the combined Thorn son-Hous
ton and Edison Companies
All manufactures in full oper
ation. Government models
of Battle Ships. The wonder
ful Hall of Mystery. The
marvelous "Little World, the
product of a mechanical
genius; all interspersed by
novelties incident to the pop
ular special days. Every
thing new and nothing dead.
Greatly reduced rates on all
transportation lines.

Some forty years" ago,' on a clcmdlosa !
Sabbatb morning, the presiaent ox tJber
lin college, Professor Pbinney, walked
briskly to the chapel there, had been a
distressing drought ana began the ser
vice with an extremely fervent prayer
for rain. The prayer was long, and be
faceitwas finished the: skies began to
darken, and almost before the congre
gation was dismissed a copious .rain, be
gan to tall, xne snggesnve raci in uns
relation is that President Phinney. had
been observed- during the -morning to
give very watchful attention, to the ba

Kavia 'Without Ootid.
We have it on the authority of Sir J.
C. Boss that in. the south Atlantic it
rained on one occasion for over an hour
when, the sky was .entirely free from
clouds. In the Mauritius and other
parts of the southern hemisphere this is
not a rare occurrence; but in Europe it
is, and the greatest known length of its
duration was ten minutes at Constanti
nople. All the Year Round.
Origin of Two Weller Stories.
Many of Dickens' stories referred to
events much spoken of at the time. The
story : of the marbles was doubtless
founded on- a tsle then current, and the
tragedy of the man who killed himself
after eating muffins was an elaboration
of the account of the suicide of the Hon.
Mr. Darner, who destroyed himself after
a surfeit of crumpets. Notes and
