OREGON'S SHOWING
AT CHICAGO
ITEXT YEAK
Remains in doubt, but there
is no question about the
Portland Industrial Ex
position which opens Sep
tember 21st and closes October
.22d, being the best Exposition
ever held on the Pacific Coast
So far as Oregon is concerned
it will be the forerunner of the
Exoosition at Chicago in
1893. The principal attrac
tions are the magnificent
American Band of Providence,
R. I. An art collection
valued at $3oU,UUU, ana em
bracing some of the greatest
pictures owned in the United
States. Immense Horticult
ural and Agricultural exhibits,
the result , of the combined
efforts of almost every county
in the state. A mineral ex
hibit exceeding all former
years. A Stock Department
showing tremendous progress.
To these are added a larger
number of exhibits than ever
before; including a magnifi
cent electrical, display under
the combined Thomson-Houston
and Edison Companies.
All manufactures in fulloper
-ation. Government models
of Battle Ships. The wonder
ful Hall of Mystery. The
marvelous "Little World," the
product of a meehanical
genius; all interspersed by
novelties incident to the pop-'
ular special days. Every
thing new and nothing dead
Greatly reduced rates on all
transportation lines.

is governed absolutely by law in all its

is without doubt fixed. Ita fluctuations
are "by'days, bymonthsi oy Beasons or

ally one from the other. Its temperature
changes, depending upon the relative
heat of the tropical and polar seasons,
aid npon thi strength' of the producing

warm water gives off a certain amount
of heat to the air above it, and if this air
$s moved to the land we feel the heat. :
' '. The presence jot the' warm water on
the coast of Europe would in no way
modify , the climate if .. the prevailing
winds were easterly instead of westerly.
If the prevailing winds in New England
in ' winter were . southeast instead of
northwest, the climate would be equal to
that of the Azore islands, mild and
balmy. For the cause of abnormal sea
sons we may look to meteorology. The
current is in its place ready to give off
the heat and moisture to the' air when
ever the. demand is made upon it, but
by the erratic movements of the air this
heat and moisture may be delivered at
unexpected times and seasons, and thus
give rise to the erroneous belief that the
Gulf Stream itself has gone astray.
