OREGON'S SHOWING
AT CHICAGO
NEXT YEAR
Remains in doubt, but there
is no question about the
Portland Industrial, Ex
position which opens Sep
tember 21st and closes October
22d, being the best Exposition
ever held on the Pacific Coast.
So far as Oregon is concerned
it will be the forerunner of the
Exposition at Chicago in
1893. The principal attrac
tions are the magnificent
American Band of Providence,
R. I. An art collection
valued at $350,000, and em
bracing some of the greatest
pictures owned in the United
States. Immense Horticult
ural and Agricultural exhibits,
the result of the combined
efforts of almost every county
in the state. A mineral ex
hibit exceeding all former
years. A Stock Department
showing tremendous progress.
To these are added a larger
number of exhibits than ever
before; including a magnifi
cent electrical display under
the combined Thomson-Hous
ton and Edison Companies
All manufactures in full oper
ation. Government models
of Battle Ships. The wonder
ful Hall of Mystery. The
marvelous "Little World," the
product of a mechanical
genius; all interspersed by
novelties incident to the pop
ular special days. Every
thing new and nothing dead.
Greatly reduced rates on all
transportation lines.

climate of UiV United, States? : To it
apposed eirotic mSvcments' isTaid the
blame of every abnormal season. There
is every evidence that the Gulf Stream
is governed absolutely by law la all its
changes. . The course through the ocean
is without doubt fixed. Its fluctuations
are by days, by months, oy seasons or
by years, and they do not vary materi
ally pne from the other. Its temperature
ciangea, depending upon the relative
heat of ; the tropical and polar seasons,
and iipon the strength of the producing
trade winds. ,The warm water may be
driven toward the shore by the waves
caused by a favorable wind, but the cur
rent, remains in its proper place1. Tfee
warm water gives off a certain amount
of heat to the air above it, and If this air
is moved to the land we feel the heat. ' "
i The. presence of the warm water on
the coast , of Europe would in no way
modify the . climate if the prevailing
winds were easterly instead of westerly.
If the prevailing winds in New England
in winter were southeast -instead of
northwest, the climate would be equal to
that , of the Azoro islands, . mild ' and
balmy. ' For the cause of abnormal sea
sons we may look to meteorology. ; The
current is in its . place ready to give off
the heat and moisture to the air when
ever the demand is made upon it, but
by the erratic movements of the air this
heat and moisture may be delivered at
unexpected times and seasons, and thus
give rise to the erroneous belief that the
Gulf Stream itself has. gone astray.
