OREGON'S SHOWING
AT CHICAGO
next' year
Remains in doubt, but there
is no question about the
Portland Industrial Ex
position which opens Sep
tember 2 1st and closes October
22d, being the best Exposition
ever held on the Pacific Coast.
So far as Oregon is concerned
it will be the forerunner of the
Exposition at Chicago in
1893. The principal attrac
tions are the magnificent
American Band of Providence,
R. I. An art collection
valued at $350,000, and em
bracing some of the greatest
pictures owned in the United
States. Immense Horticult
ural and Agricultural exhibits,
the result of the combined
efforts of almost every county
in the state. A mineral ex
Tiibit exceeding all former
years. A Stock Department
showing tremendous progress.
To these are added a larger
number of exhibits than ever
before; including a magnifi
cent electrical display under
the .combined Thomson-Houston
and Edison Companies.
All manufactures in full oper
ation. Government models
of Battle Ships. The wonder
ful Hall of Mystery. The
marvelous "Little World f" the
product of a mechanical
genius; all interspersed by
novelties incident to . the pop
ular special days. Every
thing new and nothing dead.
Greatly reduced rates on all
transportation lines.

.. Crime Dacraaatna;..:
''All' the criminal returns published of
late have happily tended to show that
crime is decreasing. The judicial sta
tistics for the past year bear the same
testimony. . Whether under the head of
''criminal classes at large" or "in local
and convict prisons and reformatories,"
the figures show a steady decline. The
same is true of the houses of bad char
acter, by .which is meant such as are
the resort of thieves, depredators and
suspected rersons. In England and
Wales there are 2,683 houses of this de
scription. It seems rather odd to be told that of
these 345 axe public houses and 265 beer
shops, because if they are known resorts
of such characters, why are their licenses
not withdrawn'!' Is it for "the reason
once given by a French administrator
that they serve the ends of the law by
providing places where those who are
wanted by the police can. easily be
found? The known houses of receivers
of stolen goods had declined from 778
two years ago to 724 last year. London
