OREGON'S SHOWING
AT CHICAGO
NEXT YEAR
Remains in doubt, but there
is no question about the
Portland Industrial Ex
position Yhich opens Sep
tember 2 1st and closes October
22d, being the best Exposition
ever held on the Pacific Coast.
So far as Oregon is concerned
it will be the forerunner of the
Exposition at Chicago in
1893. The principal attrac
tions are the magnificent
American Band of Providence,
It. I. An art collection
valued at $350,000, and em
bracing some of the greatest
pictures owned in the United
States. Immense Horticvilt
ural and Agricultural exhibits,
the result of the combined
efforts of almost every county
in the state. A mineral ex
hibit exceeding all former
years. A Stock Department
showing tremendous progress.
To these are added a larger
number of exhibits than ever
before; including a magnifi
cent electrical display under
the combined Thomson-Houston
and Edison Companies.
All manufactures in full oper
ation. Government models
of Battle Ships. The wonder
ful Hall of Mystery. The
marvelous "Little World," the
product of a mechanical
genius; all interspersed by
novelties incident to the pop
ular special days. Every
thing new and nothing dead.
Greatly reduced rates on all
transportation lines.

. - About the time Blind Tom started out J
to ahowhis wonderful ' gifts Macon de
veloped a' musical prodigry, though in a
different line. In the alley back of Eads,
Neel & Co. 's store was a blacksmith
shop owned by a man named English, a
quiet sort of a man and very popular in
his business. One day he. bought his
three-year-old boy a drum it might
have been a gift'from Santa Clans and
great was his astonishment when the
baby rattled away on the drum with the
skill of a professional.
Of course such a precocious boy soon
became known to Macon, and a mention
of it fell under the eye of P. T. Barnum,
who was then in his prime. The great
showman sent an agent to Macon as
fast as steam and coach could bring
him. After a good . deal of parleying
the agent succeeded in securing young
English, it being . understood that his
mother would accompany him. Then
the New York papers were filled with
mention of "The Infant Drummer," and
for years ho was one of. the features of
Barnum's museum. Macon (Ga.) Tel
