OREGON'S SHOWING
AT CHICAGO
NEXT YEAR
' Remains in doubt, but there
is no question about the
Portland Industrial Ex
position which opens Sep
tember 21st and closes October
22d, being the best Exposition
ever held on the Pacific Coast.
So far as Oregon is concerned
it will be the forerunner of the
Exposition at Chicago in
1893. The principal attrac
tions are the magnificent
American Band of Providence,
R. I. An art collection
valued at $350,000, and em
bracing some of the greatest
pictures owned in the United
States. Immense Horticult
ural and Agricultural exhibits,
the result of the combined
efforts of almost every county
in the state. A mineral ex
hibit exceeding all former
years. A Stock Department
showing tremendous progress.
To these are added a larger
number of exhibits than ever
before; including a magnifi
cent electrical display under
the combined Thomson-Hous
ton and Edison Companies.
All manufactures in full oper
ation. Government models
of Battle Ships. The wonder
ful Hall of Mystery. The
marvelous "Little World," the
product of a mechanical
genius; all interspersed by
novelties incident to the pop
ular special days. Every
thing new and nothing dead.
Greatly reduced rates on all
transportation lines.

Professor Chapman, of Bowdoin col
1 '
lege, told the following story at an
alumni dinner: "I feel like the little
daughter of a friend of mine in Port
land. ""She had just mastered the art of
expressing-- herself in. intelligent -sentences.-
One day she had done some
thing for which her mamma had to re
prove her. The lady gave her daughter
a sound lecture and then told her to go
up stairs, alone, in her room, , and ask
God to forgive her for her error. ' "
"In a few minutes she was surprised
to see: the baby come down 6tairs again,
appear in the sitting room and stand
back with a great deal of seriousness. '
. 'Well, did you go up and do what 1
told you? asked the fond mother.'
rt 'Yes,' replied the guilty one, 'and
God said, "Great Scott! Elsie Murray, f
I've known a great many worser girls
than you.". " Boston Herald. .
Robert Shaw, of Snow's Falls, Me.,
went to sleep in a field the other day, and
when he awoke he was minus a good pair
of trousers. Field mice, which swarm
in Oxford county; had gnawed the gar
ment into shreds and carried it away. .
Recent experiments upon the electro
lytic generation of pressure from gases
formed in a closed space have been very
successful, and a pressure of 1.200 at
mospheres lias been obtained.
