MILLER, of Grant's Pass. G. M. IRWIN, of Union. D. M. DUNNE, of Portland. . THE DUTY OF AMERICANS. Now that the dreaded scourge of chol era seems to have been pretty well wiped out in these United States, after a costly but intelligent battle with greed, ignor ' ance and superstition, it is well to turn the minds of the people to the sources --'of the pest, unci the proper, means of future prevention. Consider the fact that up to the very last moment, yester ' day at noon, pest ridden ships continued to arive in New York,, daily almost," in spite of the President, Governor Flower, Health officer Jenkins, and the protests of 60,000,0U0 people. Where rests the blame for this mena cing scourge? Possibly it dates far back, even to the first emigrant ship that brought to the United States those who could no longer find a home in other lands. Americans proudly boasted of having a free country, where all nation alities could find a home ; and ia our de sire to relieve the distressed of other nations, we have allowed them to grimly shadow our shores with pestilence and death, saying nothing of other dangers inherited by this American idea of asy lum. A Washington corresponuent says: It is the duty of every good American citizen to see that this subject is one of immediate consideration. Let the vot ers give congress to understand that this . country has had enough emigration. Kvery year thousands of the poorest, and frequently thmostabar;doned, class of foreigners are landed at our ports in the most deplorable poverty and wretch edness. They swarm into our. cities, swelling the masses of the poor, and in creasing the misery which has gradually grown beyond the aid of American char ity, as noble and as widespread as it may be. "We have had enough of immiga tion," says a Washingtonian, whose hair has grown gray pondering over the science of government. It has decreased wages, increased crime, and flooded the country with a non-self-supporting element that breeds anarchy and revo lution. It is all a mistake that "emi gration can not be stopped, that it is beneficial," as is claimed by those who favor it. The steamship companies have reaped millions from tbeir emigrants. Let congress pass a . law making it a penitentiary oflense for the 'President .and every official of the companies, and .for the captaiji and officers of every ship, to land a steerage passenger on our coasts, and tho problem will vanish. Our own poor are to be aided, and just so long as immigration continues they will have to divide labor, and this division is,beyond numerical calculation. At a gathering of distinguished scholars an American was boasting of our universal prosperity. . The great historian Carlyle remarked : "That is because yoa have not so many people there ; just wait ft while." Following up The Chkoxicle line of argument, that there is no place like the Oregon Inland Empire, Hon. A. N. Hamilton, of La Grande, now in Port land, says : "The fruit crop on the Snake river and through Baker county is immense. The yield is heavier Than it has been for years, and the quality is the very best. No California peaches -can compare with the peaches we have this year. The grapes also are very fine, some bunches weighing from two and a quarter to four pounds. I have shipped 5,000 boxes of fruit this year and am still ' gathering. Most of the fruit is shipped to Idaho, Montana and Colorado. Tho hay crop is also very heavy, and cattle are looking fine and fat. In short, Baker and Union coun ties will have no reason to complain this year, as the crops have been excep--1 Ion ally good. Threshing ia the Grande Ronde valley is nearly finished, and farmers are satisfied with their, returns. JThe wheat has averaged thirty bushels to tho acre." In Washington they have an outrage ous law for the collection of taxes, seem ' ingly enacted for the benefit of a special class. The law concerns delinquent taxpayets. Papers have been served on parties in Walla Walla for taxes in Whitman county, one case the taxes delinquent were only $2.26, while the attorney '8 fees as allowed Ay the law were $10. In every case there is an attorney's fee of at least $10, no matter how small the tax. . A New York dispatch 'gives the follow ing figures of the visible supply of grain : Wheat, 41,309,000, increase 2,653,000; corn, 9,795,000,- increase '74,000; "-bats 6,019,000, increase 604,000; rye,'670,000, increase 79,000"; barley, 430,000, increase 105,000. "-. - . --.- " What's that ? A new invention 'which works all tlie year round t Surprisin' these days are not like the old times. Bleedin' was the only remedy 'them days. But now, as you say, Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery is a true remedy for the blood." ' It's not like the sarsaparillas, that are said to be good for the .blood in March, April and May. : The " Golden Medical Discovery " works equally well at all times, in all sea-, sons and in all cases of blood-taints, or humors, no matter what their name or nature. ; "Golden Medical Discovery" is the only Blood and Liver medicine, sold by : druggists, guaranteed to benefit or cure in every case, On fair trial, or money paid for it "will be promptly refunded.
