I A D. M. DUNNE, of Portland-
It has been definitely ascertained
that the Great Northern railroad pro-
-poses to make a rate of forty cents per
100 pounds on lumber from Pnget sound
to' St. Paul. The present rate is fifty-;
five cents to St. Paul and sixty cents to
Chicago, This statement does not mean
much at " first glance, but whenjt is
studied it will show how. President Hill
proposes to build up business and make
his road a profitable investment with
freight rates which will allow our sister
state Washington to compete with
eastern producers in the great lumber
industry. It means a train of twenty
cars loaded' every day with ' shingles
alone, aggregating a trade in that one
industry of over $8,000,000 yearly : be
sides. ready sales of lumber in eastern
markets .almost impossible to estimate.
It means very much more than this,
along the line. Great deliverance long
. prayed for.
The taxpayers in Buffalo and Erie
county are confronted with, an immense
bill incident to the late strike. Under
the -laws of the state of New York,
whenever there is trouble in a county
of 60 grave a nature that the ordinary
police force cannot control it the sheriff
summons a posse comitatus. If that
force cannot subdue the rioters, then
the sheriff calls upon the governor, who
orders out the militia, and under the
law, the expense of its employment is
charged to the county where the lawless
trouble has occurred and whence the
requisition has been made, upon the
theory that the state has been called
upon to do the -work of the county. The
county, furthermore, is made responsi
ble for all damages inflicted by the riot
ers, as in Buffalo and Erie county for
the burning of cars and destruction (.of
freight and buildings. "
Time brings ninny startling changes.
Here is the 'Wnlhi Walla Union-Journal
berating Portland 'yr trying to open the
Columbia river. -uvA denouncing the
work as a "seUisli proposition.' 'How
often in years gone by, inquires the Ee
view, has the editor of the Unipn-Jour-ual
denounced Portland for its lack of
interest in an open Columbia river? .
The most effective means that has yet
been tlevised of discouraging", a certain
class of immigration is the wide publica
tion of the fact that steerage- passengers
arriving at New York are to- be subject

Some photographer might got a strik

precise moment when Premier Glad
stone is performing the customary duty
of kissing the regal hand. '
The democratic party asks the Nation
-to do something for Great Britain that
Great Britain's own colonies will not do

customs house and permit the entry of
British manufactures.
Congressman Cable has arrived at

the proprietors of Dr. Sage's Ca
tarrh Remedy. It's addressed to
you, if you have Catarrh. It's a
reward of 500, if they can't cure
you, no matter how bad your case,
or of how long standing an offer
that's made in good faith by re
sponsible men. - . .; j "Rr.hjcSiP
Think what it means r Absolute
confidence in their "Remedy, or they
couldn't afford to take the risk. A
long record of perfect and perma
nent cures of ; the worst cases or
they couldn't have faith in it.- It
means no -Triore catarrh or $500.
If you : fail to be cured, you won't
fail to bo paid.
... But perhaps you won't believc.it.
-Then there's another reason for try
ing it. Show that you can't be
cured, and you'll get $500. It's a
plain business offer. The makers
of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy will
pay you that amount if they can't
cure you. They know that they
can you think that they can't. If
they're wrong, you get the cash. If
you're wrong, you're rid of catarrh.
