President M. E. Lugulla of the Chesa
peake and Ohio and Big Four railroada
has set a bow of promise against the
dark cloud of railroad labor troubles. In
Lis annual report to the stockholders
of the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad,
just iseued, he advocates a co-operative
plan of profit sharing with the em
ployes, and considers this the best
method of meeting the growing difficul
ties of the labor problem. It Ja said that
thia would be a unique move for a rail
road company to take, as no large com
pany lias ever tried the co-operative
system. The board of directors agrees
with President Ingalls in the efficacy of
the proposed departure, and the presi
dent has recommended that the stock
holders appoint a committee to consider
the plan and take such action as will
legalize anything the directors may do
on that line. There are vast possibil
ities in Mr. IngalFs; suggestion the plan
of profit-sharing can hardly be called an
experiment, as it is a feature in several
large and succecsful manufacturing and
mercantile concerns of this country. To
make railroad employes, in part, their
own employers; to make them person
ally and aggressively interested in the
well-being of the. road . and give them
that sense of part ownership incidental
to profit-sharing, might do a .great deal
toward advancing the millennium of
capital and labor. It is a most interest
ing suggestion, and comes with a special
wmphasis at this time of trouble and unrest.
The New York Post has begun to
speculate upon the number of ways in
which Mc. Cleveland can be elected with
out New York. There are several, each
more unlikely of realization than its pre
decessor. Hut while the tendency to
impossible combination is to madness
near allied, there is just a glimmer of
sanity in the recognition of the fact that
Xew York is for Benjamin Harrison, by
a hopeless majority.
The Oregon democratic . papers are
lamenting the failure of negotiations for
a fusion with the people's party to beat
the Harrison electors in this state fn
November, but it is believed, neverthe
less, that they still hope to work some
scheme extensive enough to mix up the
electoral vote of Oregon.
Prof. Garner, the man who thinks
monkey chatter its real talk, is lecturing
before learned bodies in Great Britain
in support of his theory. His journey
to central Africa, where he will enter
into communication with the various
ape families, will not be much longer
delayed.
"The mother of the Rev. Robert Fuiton

veutov of a steamboat. It would not
seem inappropriate, to a man up a tree
for some one of the new ocean flyers to
be named after Fulton.
Belva Lockwood maintains a deeper
silence than any of the other presiden
tial candidates, and it is feared that
her maid has used up tint letter of ac
