PATH OF THE CHOLERA.
Dispatches todny indicate the ucar
approach of the cholera, it having
reached London from Hamburg, and is
expected from th eaine edorco at New
York within a short time. The first
: warnings of the London lancet are now
regarded with more significance, and
that paper now takes the ground that
it is the dutv of the hoar to prepare lor
the invasion, as if its coming were as
aured. For this reason the lancet ad
vises the immediate opening of training
schools for cholera nurses. Unless this
training is begun at ouce, it enye, we
are likely to find ourselves in the grasp
of the epidoinic without a staff of nurses
oapable of attending the sick. The pa
per declares that ordinary nurses can
not deal properly with cholera patients.
7A special training is required. In giv
ing its reasons loe- predicting the n
vtrance of the disease into England, the
Lancent argues that the rapidity with
which the infection has traveled, by the
aid of German railways carrying Rus
sian emigrants to the North sea, has
brought us face to face with a type of
he disease having all the virulence oi
the Asiatic form.
New York papers say all precedents
of previous cholera epidemics point to a
greater danger to the United States the
year following an outbreak in Europe
than in the same year, bnt the sanitary
officials of the United States express the
opinion that the advances made in tho
- sanitation and the methods of disinfec
tion, and the increased' knowledge ac
quired of the gorms of the malignant
disease since - the last serious cholera
visitation, will enable thorn to break the
- precedents and ward off an epidemic al
together. In our southern ports, nota
bly at Charleston, the summer quaran
tine, which is always strictly enforced,
is in operation. One extra precaution
lias been taken ; the quarantine station
, has boen provided with the Hoel ya
. tern of steam sanitation and disinfec
tion, and is very complete. " -All
vessels arriving hereafter from
- these ports will be detained at all quar
antine stations of the south Atlantic
ports. No vessel is expected at San
Francisco from any affected port before
the middle of December.
Eye experts insist that people who
wish to preserve their eyesight will do
well to.conGne their reading as far as
possible to round, fat-faced typo, and to
avoid that which is tall and thin. It
was tho shape of the typo of tho tiny
edition of Dante produced at the French
exposition almost as much as its minute
ness which bunded some of the persons
engaged in correcting the sheets. An
other important point is to avoid ' too
wide a columu, or tbo eye is strained.
The only way to neutralize tho tendency
to such strain is to turn the head from
side to side after the manner of short
sighted-people. Tho width of a column
of reading matter ought not to exceed
at the outside two inches, because that
is about the natural range of the eye
when the head is kept motionless.
It ia stated that oil in quantities has
been found at a railroad camp on the
Lewis and Clarke river, on the Astoria
and Portland railroad. . : If this proves
true, the development of that section
will be rapid. Surface indications-point
to a great oil ' basin in the' Flathead
country, and an attempt will be made to
prove its existence in paying quantities.
Reports from St. Petersburg show an
other unward inmn inr the -niTtnhAr of
lnew cholera cases fn Russia. '.There
were yesterday 6,822 new cases, an.in
crease p700 overHhe previous day.
The deaths were '2.977, an increase "of
230. In St. Petersburg alone, there were
108 now cases and 24 deaths.
