THOSE INFLUENCE CLUBS.
The husbands, fathers and brothers of
America are a little carious as to the
plan of attack to be pursued by that og-
gregation ot rew iork mothers, wives
and sisters, which has lately gone in for
politics in what is known as the Frances
Folsom Influence club, as its members
are home women who want to take part
in the straggle by exercising a gentle In
flue nee upon the voters witli whom they
coma in contact in the quiet paths of
- domestic life.
Hut how is tbnt influence to be p
plied?
It can be taken for granted that the
ladies will not wield infloonce as it
wielded at certain ward elections; by
the persuasive eloquence of $2 bills,
And they are not likely to make stump
speeches. It is this dark uncertainty as
to the methods they will persue that
ought to fill the anti-Cleveland voters of
New York city with profound apprehen
sion. What inaidous and subtle devices
they may employ can only bo imagined.
iney may even adopt Dy-laws giving
such instructions as these:
No member will permit her husband
to emoKe in tuo parlor until be swears
to vote for Cleveland.
No member will allow her daughter
to receive attentions from a republican.
All members will consider it a duty to
go tnrougn tneir uuaoanas' pockets reg
ularly at night until the latter have de
clared allegiance to the democratic plat'
form.
A certain lecture on tariff delivered at
3 a. m., will be found verv efficacious if
your husband is sleepy.
Demand exorbitant sums for clothing,
on tne pica tnat protection raises prices
If your husband comes home late,
weep copiously until he tells you what
kept him . Then say that if he had been
at a democratic rally you wouldn't have
cared.
In short, there is no knowing what
subtle, insidious and dangerous kinds of
influence these clubs may exert. Until
the Frances Folsom Influence club, an
nounces a definite policy New York
voters will be wary and exceedingly re
served. .
While the 1 attle headed members of the
people's party are talking about Wall
street domination of the United States
and consequent oppression of the rest of
the country, the business of the stock
exchange, the central feature of that
money centre, is so dead-alive that . the
institution is having all that it can do to
ran itself at anything like a fair pace.
The American people are becoming more
and more independent of Wall street,
and its operations, and the absurdity of
charging that a few thousand persona
are tyrannizing over many millions of
freemen is more apparent now than ever
before.
Conrad Jordan of Salisbury, Md., who
died a few days ago, was an eye -witness
of some of the great events of the first
Napoleon's time. When only 8 years old
he saw the famous battle of Leipsic, and
a few years later was with Napoleon at
Waterloo. He was a son of Marehal
Jordan.
There doen't seem to be much danger
of a fusion of the democrats and peoples
party in Minnesota. Ig. Donnelly, the
peoples candidate for governor, is getting
an average of three columns of abuse t
day from the democratic St. Paul Globe
Free silver is the price of Colorado' i

Tmu Railway Cammluloi Suits.
Dallas Aug. 23. In a decision In
the case of the railroads against the
Texas railroad commissioners, Judge
McCormick has decided "every point in
favor of the railroad companies, and
granted an injunction against the com
missioners, restraining them from es
tablishing the proposed rates. These
rates as proposed by the commission
the railroads claimed would com
pel them to run the roads at a serious
loss.
Too Much For Oscar.
New Yobk, Aug. 23. When asked
why her husband, Mr, Wilde, did hot
return to America with her, Mrs: Leslloj
as her many acquaintances persist -in
calling her, replied : "The climate does
not agree with Mr. Wilde. - It is too ex
hilerating. Hia nature needs repose;
I hope he will be bo far recovered as Jo
join me later. He is a very capable marij
but our climate acts peculiarly on him. 7
