brought back - M. Senillaz, who went
out two years ngo on mission from
the French minister of iosts and tel
egraphs in search of the isonandra
gutta pereha tree in Malaysia The
disappearance of this tree threatened
with great embarrassment, if not ex
tinction, the submarine cable manufac
ture. But M. Semi laz has discovered
large forests uf these trees, and has hit
upon practicul "ways of collecting the
gum tvithont destroying the trees, as
the natives inevitably do:- M. Serullaz
has been allowed to transport several
hundreds of the trees from ten to fifteen
years old to Algiers, and their cultiva
tion will be attempted also in Guiana.
M. Serullaz has left for Algiers with his
cargo, which is artificially warmed on
