Portland has let the contract for
building her ntw city hall to Gould &
Gladden, of Omaha, for $361,370, to
which to get tho actual proposed cost
about $100,000 will have to be added for
extras. The etone to be u?ed in the
buildiug will be shipped all the way
from Wyoming, whereat people inter
ested in quarries situated in territory
tributary to Portland are justly die
pleased. Portland expects the trade of
her own state and gets a portion of the
trade of interior Washington, yet she
must ship the stone for her magnificent
new city building from Wyoming,
while the home quarries remain undo
veloped. Such, says the Ashland Tid
ings, is the reward we got for paying
our bills to the Portland merchants on
tho first of every month promptly.
The only social club of which Mr.
Blaine is a member is the Kebo Valley
club of Mount Desert, which recently
elected, the ex-secretary of state to hon
orary membership. In discussing his
election with some friends at Bar Har

touching of a spring they disappear into
Iron safes concealed in tho walls. 8im
iilarly the valuable pictures turn on a

said that these extraordinary precau

baron after the insurrection of the com

Coming home again, is theold steamer
Hassalo, which has been over to Puget
sound these many years. That she is
not superahuated is owing, perhaps to
tho fact that she was constructed out of
Oregon timber, by Dalles mechanics, be
rfore so many tricks in trade were known
;-as now. She will be used between As
. toriaar.d Portland in the towing and
freighting business. On he,r arrival the
-' tS. G. Reed will go into the yard for an
overhauling. The Reed will be given a
uew bull and put in first-c'ass shape for
the fall service, making six river boats
..that the Union Pacific can operate.
A couple of ranchers living near Reed
ley, California, last night saw a man in
st cart drawn by a brown horse at a point
a mile cast and north of Dinuba. Two
men on horseback joined him. lhey
were heavily armed. The man in the
-cart was very lame in the left leg. He
- was light complesioned, about five feet
"ten Or six feet in height. He said: "My
borse is near played out." The three
men remained together near the railroad
. until after dark. The informants could
not tell which way tho three men went,

Golden Medical Discovery purifies
and enriches the blood, cleanses the

diseases arising from impure blood.
Consumption is one of them. It's

a cure. It's easy to see why. The
medicine that masters scrofula in
one part, is the best remedy for it in
another. It is the best. It's war
ranted. It's the only blood and long
remedy that's guaranteed to benefit
or cure, or the "money will be re

class does it. How many would be
