. He tayd Hypnotize. - . ' !
That hypnotism is a dangerous -sci-
enoe, even in skilled bands, was once
more. d ernonstrated at Le Bom-get, near
Paris.- . A professor of legerdemain, who
was giving on entertainment in a cafe,
and enjoyed some considerable reputa
tion as a hypnotist, proposed concluding
the evening's amusement by an exhibi
tion of his skill. A young- man named
Raylant volunteered to act as the sub
ject, and after some difficulty was ren
dered completely unconscious. The pro
fessor then performed' the usual tricks
with him, but when it came to awaken
ing found, to his astonishment, that it
was quite impossible to effect it.
" Raylant was sent home and medical
help was summoned, but the doctor
could only recall him to conciousness for
a few seconds, after which the young
man relapsed into an agitated sleep, in
terrupted at intervals by violent nerv
ous crises. -Up to to-day Raylant has
only- had a few waking moments, during
which he complains of excessive weak
ness and pains in the head.. An inquiry,
has been opened by the police authori
ties. Paris Cor. London Telegraph.
How Ancient Builder Built.
The builders of Babel built well. Tra
dition relates that it was only a confu
sion of tongues that checked their aspi
ration. There can be no doubt that the
foundations of the celebrated tower that
was designed by its architect to reach
"heaven" were of the broadest and heav
iest sort; let us say vast walls of the
most solid granite, bound and knit to
gether by that most excellent insoluble
cement that is one of the lost arts to
modern, constructionists. Yet if latter
day engineers be not hopelessly in error
with concern to the conclusions they
have drawn as ' respects ancient ma
sonry from the ruins of ancient struc
tures, ancient builders, counted only on
the law of gravitation, which they knew
in an empiric way, for the .safety of the
works they wrought. -The projector of
the Nag-on-Wat, whose walls and roof
micht have' sheltered a St. Peter s and a
St. Paul's and still have haft room for a
building like the Equitable in Broadway
within its vast inclosures, would never
dream of setting his masons to begin the
laying of his walls say at about fifty feet
from the ground. Harper s Weekly.
