"THE COOS SAY JOB.
One reason which may be mentioned
in connection with the advanced ideas
concerning the Cooa bay improvement
is that the California delegation in con
gress entertain opinions which favor the
advancement of Pacific coast interests,
whether located -in California or not
Coos bay holds similar relations to Cal
ifornia ; but on a very limited ecale, in
comparison to similar relations existing,
but not realized, between the Columbia
river and the people of the state of
Washington. And it is that close com
unercial relationship between Coos bay
.and California which gives the Califor
,nia delegation a friendly interest, such
as should exist, with similar advanced
ideas, on the part of the Washington
delegation. Were this possible, the in
telligeut press of the Pacific Northwest
would not now feel humiliated with the
intimations that "a local job has been
. engineered at Coos bay." It should be
stated that these intimations come
from a certain disgruntled faction in
the state of Washington, which failed
to secure "for a purely local job at Seat
tle," an appropriation which would
have endangered the completion of the
cascade locks, and so much toward an
open Columbia river. With all the
miles of the Columbia tributary to the
people of Washington, it is far from
creditable to her delegation in congress
that they failed to emulate the friendly
interest of the California delegation for
Cooa bay ; and the attempt to even pre
sume that local jobs are permissible in
Washington city, after tlveir defeat, is
unbecoming in the supporters of Mr,
Senator Allen, or any other man.
The existing rivalry between Knute
Nelson, the nominee for governor of the
Minnesota republicans, and Ignatius
Donnelly, the champion of the peoples
party, results from theirold-time rivalrv
-in the Minnesota state senate more than
ten years ago. They were continually
at war on points of parliamentary pro
cedure, and as Donnelly was even then
a recognized authority in that line it
nettled him to be outwitted, as ho - fre
quently was, by the keen-minded little
Norwegian. One point raised by Nelson
.against the Baconian sage was so knotty
that it gave the lieutenant-governor a
three-days' search of the books before he
could decide it. His Cnal decision was
against Donnelly, to the great amuse
ment of the en ti re state.
. On Friday last it was just 200 years
since Rebecca Nurse was hanged at
Salem, Mass., on account of her religious
.convictions, and because she would not
confess to being a witch. The anniver
8ary was observed in what is now the
town of Danvere. For a long time her
tomb was without a mark, lier body
-.having been stolon by her eons from the
. gallows for interment. Her latter de
scendanta have just unveiled a memorial
tablet, suitably inscribed, in honor of
the forty persons who maintained the
innocence of this Now England martyr
.before the court which condemned her,

even Consumption yields to the
wonderful effects of Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery. It
won't make new lungs but it will

Though England has had many prime
'ministers who lived to lie octogenariane,
there has been but one British premier
in this century besides Mr. Gladstone,

when past 80. That aged statesman was
Lord Palmers ton, who died at his post
in hie 81st year, in 1865.
Marlon Harlands Opinion.
Readers of Thb Chronicle are familiar
not only with the sprightly writings of
v Marion Harland, but also with her sound
common sense dpon matters of everyday
life and action. Hor name, indeed, is a
household word, and is equally well
known in parlor and kitchen. Her cele
brated cook book, "Common Sense in
the Household," is without a peer and
-shows that she has made a careful study
of how to prepare good , -Nyliolesome food ,
in the best manner by the best materials.
In tbi9 issue wv produce a facsimile
letter from Marion Harland that speaks
from her experience in the highest terms
-of the unequalcd qualities of the Royal
. Baking powder. Housewives every where
should read the opinion of Buch an expert
and act accordingly. All good cooks, who
have used the .Royal, are of the same
opinion also.
