. The Christian at Work puta us in the
Btood of substituting another word for
"Christian," in its work of scandalizing
Oregon's sea port. It says: "Oregon has
s.t Portland the only harhor worthy of
the name. To reach it vessels have
hitherto encountered a dangerous sand
bar at the luouth of the Columbia and
traverse 100 miles of that river and 12
miles of the Willamette on which the
city is .located. Moreover by
the construction of the jetties of the
general government, the obstruction at
the mouth of the river is beiiu removed
and there, is good hope that also by na
tional aid a ship canal will be con
structed around the rapids. Thi ap
pears in a communication probably
from some Presbyterion preacher in at
tendance upon the general assembly,
who knew no better, perhaps, and the
Satan who prompted him was somebody
living in Portland who undoubtedly
koew he was outrageously lying when he
liutated the statement. As the "Chris
tian at Work,", is a scholarly publica
tion of wide circulation, it ought, in
Justice to truth, to correct the mistake.
Mr. 3.'V. Smalley,.the veteran journ
alist and publisher is traveling in his
private car in the Pacific northwest, ac
companied by his daughter and two sons.
Tlwjir car is a model of unpretentious,
domelike comfort. The culinary de
gtAttaaejit is in charge of a young w hite
Yeoman from Mr. Sinalley'a home in St.
Ptuil. During the day Miss Suialley op
crates a typewriter for her father, and
t mglit she entertains him with music
suid. novel -reading. It is doubtful if
"there Is in the United states a man
.having a broader and more intricate
knowledge of the west than that jks
seesed by Mr. Snialley. He has traveled
verthe country in every conveyance
known to civilization and savagery, has
jotw foto the remotest sections, has
made an especial study of the .resources
a.ad capabilities of the country lying be
tween the lakes and the Pacific ocean.
Few men are more distinctively Ameri
can in experiences and convictions. He
recently contributed to his magazine a
aeries of personal reminiscenses that are
delightful in literary style and fascinat-
ing historic interest.
-V daring Wnk robber is in custody in-Vranfcfort-on-the-Main,
who has been
posing in handsome style as Edward
Carson, an American millionaire, ut
Rerlin and Baden. The police inspector
recognized "Carson" as Hardy, for
whom the police of many, large cities in
the United States and Caida have been
eearcliing since December last. He will
b held for extradition.
Late reports concerning the condition
frf Hon. W. R. Kllis, who was so severely
Icart some time since, indicate that his
improvement continues, and unless
cotoething unlocked for happens his re
5i?ery will be rapid. His injuries were
wry serious, and he is tobecongratnlat

worse results than temporarv discom
fort. Twelve years ago, Dr. N. G. Blalock
bought 400 acres of barren sagebrush'
iUad at 1.K0 an acre, near Walla Walla.
Me irrigated it and planted it all with
fruit trees, and now it is worth about
400 n acre.
