ARISTOCRATIC TYRANNY.
The affair at Homestead has brought
prominently into view the arietocratic
government of the amalgamated associa
tion. A government as despotic, tyranni
cal and oppressive as was ever exercised
by any aristocracy in' hietory. It hae
been shown that the vrholt number of
men personally interested in the ques
tion of wages at the Carnegie works was
nbout S2T ont of a total of 3,S00. These
325, the high-priced men, whose wages
range from seven to twelvedoliars a day,
form the governing class, the aristocracy
of Homestead. They are the rulers of
the amalgamated association.
To maintain their income and to show
their power, they command that no man
filial! work but by their orders, and the
more than three thousand others, main
ly common workmen whose scanty wages
ere not affected by the scale, obediently
submit and starve. There is perhaps
no other trade in which the distinction
between the aristocracy and the com
mons is so strongly marked as it is in
the iron mills.- In many labor nnions
the general tendency is to discourage
excellence and to keep the skilled work
men down to the standard of the un
skilled. But even here there are usually
ttmad a few shrewd schemers living tip
on ttie wages of the industrious, who as
sume despotic jKwer, and in a strike it
is invariably the few who profit and the

Theelectioi in Great Britain is now
practically settled, and Gladstone is
master of the situation. As the English
press forecast events in America for a
iww president, and congress ; it may
be interesting to note what is likely to
follow -across -the Atlantic. Mr. Glad
tonewill force the fighting, and Lord
Salisbury will wait to be removed from
affiice by a decisive vote in the house of
-commons. To this duty Mr. Gladstone
-will first address himself. After-that
will come tlve great home-rule fight.
. Probably the new prime ' minister will
'anot rest until he has won or until defeat
by the house of lords has caused him to
turn :the liberal batteries upon that
$ody.' But the fighting will not be al
together along one line. ' The liberal
programme is not confined to home rule,
but includes the questions of one man
one vote, registration reform, comxul-'
sory rural allotments, the taxation of
ground rents, Welsh disestablishments
and several other important features.
The notion that Mr. Gladstone will be
forced to take an appeal to the country
ait an early date may or may not be well
founded. He seemingly will have no
occasion to do so unless the Irish con
tingent shall conclude to render conspic
uous service -to the tory enemy of in
ternal dissentions. In that event Mr.
Gladstone may be compelled to appeal.
The tranquility of our empire on the
lxk.es seems to excite the animosity of
the dominion government, and if any
reliance cau he put in the telegraph: re
ports we may have a little brush over it.
The great lakes of North America,
Superior, Huron, Ontario, Michigan and
flErie. sustain an immense traffic. Lakes
Erie and Ontario connect by the
Welland canal. ' On the American, side
Oswego aud Sacketts harbor are the
most-important points, and. on the
' Canada side are Kingston, Toronto .and
' Hanover. :The Soo, meaning the Sault
Ste. Marie canal, is 7,000 feet long, 108
feet wide, and 16 feet deep. It was be
' gun in .Tune, 1853, and two, years, later
- was navigated from Lake Huron to Lake
Superior. The lock has two cells, each
320x70 feet, depth 11.6 feet. How does
this work compare with that at the cas
cades for time? It may be interesting
to know, wit!) regard to the nature and
importance of the commerce of the
United States via the Great Lakes with
the rest of the world, beginning at Chi
cago, that, crossing four of those vast
' bodies of water, Hie extent of country
traversed from Chicago to the Straits of
Belle Isle is about 2,200 miles, or one
lialf the distance' between Chicago and
Liverpool by this route.
