It lookfl very much as if Oregon's state
house would not be ornamented by a
dome, this .year. AVork was to have
commenced on .Tolv 1st. and now the
month is nearly gone and nothing has
been done, while all the hands have
been withdrawn. ' The contractors
placed their order for the steel with
Carnegie and the recent riot and strike
jit Homestead have so delayed that the
material has not yet been nhipped and
cannot now reach here in less than sixty
days. .This would bring it so near into
the rainy season that at would be poor
judgment to leave the capitol without a
roof at that time, and then it would
make ot. the state house an iron foundry
during the session of the legislature in
-January. It is likely, the board of capi
tol building commissioners will not let
the woi k. proceed until next season .

Oregon has 111,770 school children
64,607 females, and 57,103 males. Wasco
county has 1,452 males, 1,424 females.

The Homestead strikers are pretty
mad but not mad enough to lose sight
of the help given them by protection.
They testified before the democratic
congressional committee that the tariff
has raised their wages, and that without
the tariff they would have to work for

to this country from England seems to
be laboring under- the erroneous im
pression that Mr. William W. Astor's
physical condition is of interest to peo
ple in this, country. We are quite as
solicitous about the spiritual condition
of the abkoond of Swat.
Although Cleveland expects to achieve
the presidency by means of the west he
chooses his captains and lieutenants
ifrom the ranks of ex -office holders in
(the east. May be the west isn't smart
-enough to notice these little significances.
