CLEVELAND HAS OBJECTIONS.
Recently the public was informed of
the organization in New York of a
Frances Cleveland influence club, for
the purpose of fostering and furthering,
by woman's subtle influence, the cause
of democracy. Just what the plan of
influential campaign was to be was a
mystery, though that it would he effica
cious no good and gallant democrat had
at doubt. But when Mrs. Cleveland was
officially informed of the movement she
.referred the matter to Mr. Cleveland,
and the latter, after commending the
efforts and general plans of the ladies,
writes to them as follows : "It is, how
ever, impossible for us to approve of the
use of Mrs. Cleveland's name in the
designation of clubs designed to do polit
ical work. We trus-t you will not under
value our objection, because it rests
upon the sentiment that the name now
sacred in the home circle as wife and
mother may well be spared in the organ
isation and operation of clubs created to
exert political influence."
Oa the whole, most husbands, broth
ers und fathers -will be inclined to agree
with the author. Theoretically the pro
cesses of politics should be such that no
woman might feel unwilling to have her
name figure therein conspicuously.
Practically the case is otherwise. Re
finement and delicacy do not characterize
modern politics. If candidate John
Krjoith finds that his campaign is to be
jsopported by the bandying about of Mrs.
.Jeannette Smith's name or its liberal
'-display, in torchlight transparencies he
will naturally object- It is an objection
of sentiment of course, but the senti-
ruftnt w hich prompts a man to keep his
wifes name sacred to home uses is not
mawkish. It is a sentiment which
tot men will sympathize with.

written a letter in which he undertakes
to-state the wealth of the most noted
rnen of the country. It is generelly easy
to overestimate the fortunes of wealthy
raes, but in this case other inaccuracies
-occur. The list now going the rounds is
misleading as to some men well known
In Washington. The second name on
the list is that of Levi P. Morto::, Vice
President of the United States, His
-tortune is stated at $5,000,000. Mr.
Morton is worth twenty millions. Fur
ther -on ex-Secretary Whitney is put
down as having $5,000,000. Mr. Whit
jneya income is over a million a year.

him to tell just how much he is worth,
Iiis property and that of his brother-in-law,.
Oliver Payne, being very much
mixed together,, yet it would obviously
foe ridiculous to put down Mr. Whitney
.-t less than twenty millions. . He is
probably worth a great deal more. Next

Iut down as having $50,000 he has more
than twice as much. . He owns a bur
square mansion in. Portland, Me., worth
a. good deal of money, and he -lias : con
siderable other property. Then we have
"'Whitelaw Reid's wealth stated at $2,000
800. Two of Mr. Reid's residences have
ost more than that amount. It is not
easy to define Mr. Read's fortune other
wise than by saying that he, is the son-in-law
of D. O. Mills. Mr. Mills' estate
is at least $30,000,000, and Whitelaw
with his wife and children, will get half
wt it. Chief-Justice, Fnller'a fortune is
aid to be 4100,000. A single, piece of
real estate in Chicago owned bv him. is
worth mnch more than that. - Judge
Fuller is worth more than $500,000, as
everybody knows, who knows anything
.about him.
