The story is that the friction which
started the Coeur d Alene troubles was
a fight at a dance in a saloon at Gem on
Saturday night. Early Sunday morning
the fun was blowing fast and furious,
and a fight occurred between a -union
nd a non-union man. The non-union
combatant was worsted so badly that it
was necessary to take him to the hos
pital. The wounded man was placed
.aboard a hand-car, and a couple of his
companions pushed the car to the hos
pital. Upon their return they were met
by a party of union men, and another
set-to took place. The non-union men
were again worsted and obliged to seek
refuge in the Frisco mill. Tins little
fracas eerved as a spark to ignite the
flame that had been smoldering for the
past month, and in an hour both factions
were preparing for tbe big scrap that
followed. The fighting element have
sneered at the employment of attorneys,
and have said that nothing could come
of the fight at Boise; that it was a waste
.of time and resources, and that the non
union men ought to be run out of the
country. The example set by the strik
ers at Homesteiid exerted a great deal of
vil influence in certain quarters. The
turbulent elements declared - that the
strike was being conducted on milk and
water tactics, and that if they had had
their own way in the beginning the
right would have been won long ago.
Then came the news that the federal
court had made the injunction perpetual,
.and tno flame broke out.
The controversies upon right and
"wrong, directly involved in the Home
- stead and Ccur d' Alene riots, ought to
be s reudily disposed of as are contro
w.'orsieb between the people and the rail
"ways. If it is right and legal to appoint
coimnittes of ui nitration by congress and
the states for such purposes, then it is
equally so to arbitrate clashes between
labor and capital. Congress now has
the subject up for investigation, and
will probably see the necessity for, and
the justice of, some such action. It
-would be a long stride in the effort to
- check the disposition of people to resort
to lynch law, produce a better regard
;or statute law, and materially lessen
complaints following all legal restraint.
With such commission as we speak of
the growing disposition all over the
country to iguoi the forms of law and
ke its execution into private and nn-
authorized hands would vanish.
"Mr. William Waldorf Astor is dead ;"
and "Mr. William Waldorf Astor is not
- lead is the purport of dispatches from
'-JLandedown bouse today. For some
mysterious reason there seems to be a
-disposition on the part of the Astor
: family to suppress the cause of Astor'a
death. When the family decide whether
or not he is dead, the press will be be
informed.
There is no probability that the tariff
measures which have passed, the house
will get before the senate this session.
The finance committee, to which they
were all referred is of the opinion that
if they are reported 'other." would be
urged. As they would prolong the ses
sion indefinitely the committee is ad
verse to take any action in the matter.
The subject of the tariff, how ever, will
probably be heard from again in the
eenate either on Hale's resolution as to
a comparison between the republican
policy and thS "tariff for revenue only"
or on Vest's resolution directing the
finance committee to report back the
house bill putting wool on the free list.
Through an oversight doubtless, the
prohibition party failed to remark in its
platform that the floods in the west
were not exactly ' the sort of uprising
4hey want.
Pmu Kelly comes out in theOregonian
again, in fourteen columns '. closely
printed matter yesterday. He says not a
word as to-why he felt himself a stronger
nan than Sampson to "handle .Wilson.
If Wilson, the murderer of Mamie
Walsh, gives the Salem prison officials
ny further trouble, they will put him
in a straight jacket and confine him .in

Mr. W. M. Terry who baa been in the
drag business at Elkton,- Ky., for the
past twelve years, says: ''Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy gives better satis
faction than any other cough medicine I
have ever sold." There is good reason
for this. - No other will cure a cold so
quickly: no other is so certain a pre
ventive and cure for croup : no other
affords so much relief in cases of whoop
ing cough. For sale by Blakeley &
Houghton, druggists. ". d&w
