In Col. Sidney Pell the writer hus for
many years recognized an active pro
gressive citizen, an ability you will often
find the need of, in planning and devis
ing at certain periods, for filling out or
filling in, to develop a public benefit.
His superior capacity, on more than one
occasion, has popped up just in the
niche of time, like that marvelous ma
chine of modern days the Bowers
dredge; to pump out a channel and to
fill up a. flat with one identical force. It
was Col. Dell who, early pointed to the
convenient hills of Astoria to render
available the water front of that modern
"Venice for mercantile pursuits. It was
lie who, scanning the plat from Smith
point up Summit avenue to Cockscomb
hill, and on to John Day river, pictured
he fac simile of New York city. On a
oroad liberal basis he has been working
'for the benefit of Astoria and the de
velopment of the immense natural ad
vantages that lay at her doors ; in sim
ple dispassionate language has he often
told what could be expected if energy,
and capital were employed at the mouth
of the Columbia, and he has proven at
various times conclusively, that the
prosperity -of any section of country from
Tongue point to the ocean would be
beneficial to Astoria. By comparison
of Astoria's location with that of New
York in the earlier history, he lias pub
lished to the world that the conditions
m-ere similar in the undeveloped state,
.-and that there is due to the mouth of
.the 'Columbia river in time, and by the
..expenditure of money and effort, the
metropolitan proportions which now
exist on the Atlantic coast. All this,
and more, has he done; but we are
greatly astonished to hear from Astoria,
liow, that he is thought to be radically
hostile to interests which he has so often
-enthusiastically advocated.
It is related that President Harrison,
then only a colonel, could not promptly
secure surgeons to care for his wounded
after the battle of New Hope -Church.
He therefore took off his coat, rolled up
his sleeves and did what be could i him
self to staunch the flow of blood and to
dress wounds; he directed that tents be
torn up into bandages and he spent
hours in work over hiH disabled soldiers
.before the surgeons arrived.
An Idaho man proposes to find the
source of the fine gold found in such
abundance in Snake river. His theory
is that the flour gold is washed from
some tremendous streak of pure metal,
and he proposes to find it. He has se
lected the Teton range of mountains as
" the place where lie will probably find it,
-and will at the earliest possible date
begin his explorations there.
X curreut item says that "a Buffalo
man proposes to furnish the worlds fair
with an attraction in the shape of a col
lection of snakes. He claims to be able
to Fhow as many as 2,000 different varie
ties." He must have been gleaning
from the gold cure institutes.
- Thousands of people flocked to the
'-scene of Saturdays explosion at Berke
ley yesterday, and gazed-with wonder
at the havoe wrought by the force of the
explosion. No more bodies have been
found, and it is now thought that six is
the total number of lives lost.
The Boise Statesman asks the eastern

vacation. The vacation part is all right,
but Gould's example is all wrong. .'yVUen

Stanley roughing it with Zulus and

Stanley begging a disorderly crowd to
vote for him, please, is easily surpassed
by the average ward politician in the
matters of 'dgnijftndimpreesiveness
Mr. Ignatius Donnelly declared that
he did not want the people's party nom
ination for the -presidency. Mr. Don
nelly's energies will be fully employed
in digging a weighty cryptogram ont of
the party platform.
At last the weather prediction ia meet
ing some stiff competition from its for
midable rival, the campaign lie. -

Mr. W. M. Terr-, who has been in the
drug business at "Elk ton, Ky., for the
past twelve years, ' says : "Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy gives better satis
faction than any other cough medicine I
have ever sold." There is good reason
for this. No other will cure a cold so
quickly; no other-is bo certain a pre
ventive and cure for croup ; no other
affords eo much relief in cases of whoop
ing cough. For sale by Blakeley &
Houghton, druggists. " d&w
