Dr. Candiana, of Cascade Locks has
been elected justice of the peace, and
van now be hailed as judge.
A fire at Dufur yesterday destroyed a
dwelling. Fortunately the wind was
right to prevent its spreading.
One reason there were no more trades
represented in the pi-ocession, material
for decorations could not be had.
Win. Lemon, who broke his collar
bone yesterday by falling from a frac
tious horse, is under treatment by Dr.
J. Sutherland.
Mr. John Irwin has changed his resi
dence permanently from Linkville to
.'The .Dalles, and is now living on his
Chenoweth farm.
W. S. Turnbow has left at The Ciibon
ici,e Curiosity Shop, a curious petrifica
' tion of wood. It was found seven miles
below The Dalles.
County court was in session today,
Judge Geo. C Blakeley presiding. Three
new American citizens were turned over
under the naturalization laws.
The river this morning stood at thirty
three feet and five-tenths above zero.
Falling slowly. Temperature of the
weather at The Dalles was 70.
The common . council met this . fore
. noon, and the new city officers, includ
ing those, reelected, took upon. them
selves their new duties. The mayor's
message, and financial reports, will ap
pear tomorrow.,

as this, sends grateful blood thrilling
through the human frame.'

marriage licenses has not advanced.
Deputy Ed. Martin and ' J. A. Crossen

All the health and pleasure reports
are not located iu Wasco county. But
we have several localities unsurpassed
for pure air and water. In the heart of
the Cascade mountains there are several
resorts inferior to none on the coast of
fering attractions to those who would es
cae the heat of summer and revel in
the cool breezes that are wafted from old
Pacific.
Fifty-seven shares in the Prineville
land and live stock company will be
Bold in The Dalles on Saturday, in order
to close up an estate an estate. The
property is situated partly in this and
partly in Crook county, and is one of
the best paying properties in the coun
ty. It will pay some of our residents
who have money to invest to look after
this sale.

ou the tournament yesterday, addressed
to Chief Engineer Jud. S. Fish, of The
Dalles lire department :
Sib: The judges .selected to decide
upon the hose tournament' held at The
Dalles, July 4th, 1892, in accordance
yith the articles of agreement, beg to
report that at 2 :30 p. m. three teams
entered for the race, viz :
Mt. Hood Hose team, Columbia Hose
team, and Jackson Hose team.
The captains of the three teams drew
lots for the position in the contest, re
sulting as follows :
. Mt. Hood to run first ; Columbia 2d,
and Jackson 3d.
According to the report of the time
keepers we find that.
Mt. Hood team won first prize. Time
32 seconds.
Columbia second prize. Time 32
seconds,
Jackson third prize. Time 32h sec

.The three teams ;did their work ad
mirably, and we deem the tournament
a great benefit to" The Dalles fire de

County Assessor Joel W. Koontz filed
hie bonds today and took his position.
The American Central Railway com
pany is the title given to a new organi
zation incorporated with $20,000,000,
which is said will build .from San Fran
cisco to Boise city. If that be true it
must pass through Eastern Oregon.
The management of the Portland In
dustrial exposition is desirous of secur
ing for their exposition this fall all the
exhibits which are to be sent to the Co
lumbus worlds fair. Exhibitors will find
it to their interest to first place their
samples on exhibition at Portland since
it will not only contribute to the success
of the Portland fair, but will materially
aid them in shipping and preserving it.
Such exhibits will be well cared for un
til the exhibitors are ready " to forward
them to Chicago. This arrangement
offers great inducements, and our people
should recognize the fact in a substantial
wav.

The report of the escape of Chas. Wil
son, the murderer of Mamie .Walsh,
while being conveyed to Salem for safe
keeping is confirmed.
Judging from the way in which some
British mobs greet some British candi
dates, the act of running for office in
that country must be performed lit
erally. Referring to an open Columbia river
the Pendleton Tribune voices public
sentiment by saying enemies to these
improvements are enemies to the ma
terial progress of the nort west, and we
should jot their names down in our note
books for future reference.
It has been discovered that more than
half the prisoners in Idaho's peniten
tiary are insane to a greater or lesser
extent.. The only noted patient is a
man named Hatton. It is not known
what has produced the dementia o'f the
convicts, as they are well treated and
well fed.
The estimable Philadelphia Times in
forms an amazed public that "Victor
Hugo has been traveling in Belgium,
but couldn't be prevailed upon to visit
the field of Waterloo. Great geniuses,"
continues the Times, "are not exempt
from small sorenesses.". Yet how can
M. Hugo be blamed? Possibly he re
flects that at Waterloo he is likely at
any time to meet "Wellington and aLkl
the German kings and princes since thm
time of Luther.
Collectors this" month report ' cash
easier. One of the best indications of
easier financial affairs is noted in the
sheriff's office. The whole collections
up to Saturday amounted to $67,619.57,
which is a better showing than any
former year. The roll called for $65,
538.49, but Sheriff Cates had assessed
about $8,000, making it $73,538.49.
After deducting collections made, but
$5,918.92 remained to be collected Sat
urday. Two nien of Destinv now face ftach
other for the 6econd time.
