The motto. "In God We Trust." which
is now stamped upon all gold and silver
coins of the United States, was suggest
ed by an old f;irmer living in Maryland.'
This conscientious Christian gentleman
thought that our enrrency should indi
cate in some way the Christian charac
ter of our nation, which, tie argued,
conld be best done by putting a motto
upon our coins expressing a national re
liance on divine support in govern
mental affairs. It was in 1861, when S.
P. Chase was secretary of the treasury,
that this man wrote to Washington re
specting his pet idea. His letter was re
ferred to Mint Director Pollock, who
discussed the question in his report of
18G2.
Pollock and Chase were in favor of
introducing the motto at once, bnt con
gress gave the suggestion no attention
whatever. , In his next annual report
Director Pollock again referred to the
matter, this time in firm theological ar
gument, saying. "The motto suggested,
'God Oar Trast,' is taken from onr na
tional hym n, 'The Star Spangled Ban
ner;' the sentiment is familiar to. every
citizen of onr coantry; the time is tro
pitaoast 'tis iui hour of national peril.
