OUR BOW TO mi: PUISLIV.
Willi this issue the undersigned iis
stiures Editorial control and iinmage
ment of Tub Ciikdmci.k. Our predeces
sor, on retiring last Saturday, says all
of the fwst, ierhaj)s, which it was nec
essary to say ; but as our course leads, on
it, may not be amiss if we fay, with the
paragraphist, that : "No man can ac
complish much, either in politics or
with a wheelbarrow, unless he takes
Bides." Tiik Oiiuoxifi.E takes sides.
In local politics there is no longer any
contest, but in the national field the
threshhold is just crossed. We have
hoisted the flag of Harrison and Keid
because Tub Chronicle, to be a success,
must be essentially progressive, and to
be progressive in a national sense, in
the ITjiiled States one must be republi
can. The tak of the republican party
in the next canvass is not to get the con
sensus jf a majority of the votes of the
country. That it already has. The
progress of America requires at its head
st party which is homogeneous; which
lias cavict ions and the courage of its!
rxmvictioue.. A party whose aim is to
k something and not merely to hold
offices.
The history uf tlie republican party is
a. history of notion, a history of deeds.
Whatever has been done in thirty years
has been done by it. We have not al
ways been absolutely wise, but we have
always been wise in our day and genera
tion. There is no aot of our past history far
enough back to be seen in ust such
lights, which any honest observer will
say was not the best that could
have been devised by human brains.
Those acts which are yet under the
stress of human passion, the very last
the storm oi obloquy and abuse; and
taking visibly the place they have al
ways really held, a place among the
jgreat deeds of a great country.
The reproaches which were heaped
upon tlie last revision of the tariff are
disappearing before the light of its prac
tical workings, and the country adjusted
U the new -conditions will demand a
period f rest from he business agita
tions of which the democratic party is
the fsrsdioc source.
EBusiness men are everywhere begin
ning to feel that some measure of stability
should attach to our laws, and that a
statute of the United States which af-

IFiithe isle revision of the tariff is
working "its way to favor, if business has
already adjusted itself to it, what reason
- can there be more controlling- in the
next election than the desire of busiuess
ma to let things alone, to stand by the
' existing order of affairs?
Such, in brief, is to be the future
position of The Chronicle upon the pol
itics of this nation, to carry out tnese
'nrindjrie. and with an acquaintance of
ver thirty years in the newspaper field
in Oregon perhaps further introduction
is unnecessary.
We invite all old patrons to stay with
us, ti1 to bring as many friends with
them as possible, sanguine in the belief
that we shall lie able to serve you all,
faithfully, in every manner, to the ex
Centof our ability. Very Respectfully,
D. C. Ireland.
The enthusiasm in Tammany hall
wver Cleveland's nomination was so in-
fienee that the oil froze in the lamps.
As we understand the situation, Tam
many will not be reconciled to the work
of dark and devious methods, it cannot
consistently advocate the election of a
man who was nominated between two
days.

Mr. W. M. Terry, who has been in the
drug business at Elkton, Ky., for the
past twelve years, says: "Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy gives better satis
faction than any other cough medicine I
have ever sold.'' There is good reason
for this. No other will cure a cold so
quickly ; no other is so certain a pre

affords so much relief in cases of whoop
