. Mr. John Luce, peoples' party candi
date for congress for the second Oregon
district, ia suffering from an abcess on
his-tongue. Unkind critics call it a
species of the mouth disease.
The people's party are greatly pleased
with Governor Pennoyer's recent speech
on free silver and well they may. It is
not every day a party gets a convert of
the size of the governor and it is not
every day a party loses one his size
either.-
mi fx 1 Tf . . .
ne vregon noneers nave aireaay set
the ball in motion to provide means for
visiting the Columbus fair; at Chicago,
next year. They propose to secure cars
and facilities for carrying all, in trains
of large eectiotis, and retain the use of
the cars while at the fair.
Montana has developed a "highway
lady" and Kentucky has just come to
the front with a "lady moonshiner"
who can outshoot any man in the state
and whip him to boot. Thus in all the
avenues of our national life women are
asserting their claims to equality with
their competitors of the opposite sex.
As if to confirm the position of The
Chronicle, on the 11th, that the Colum
bia river had not yet been fully discov
ered, at 10 o'clock Saturday Portland
discovered that the deepest vessels may
come np that far, without the aid of
of congressional appropriations. The
cruisers Charleston and Baltimore are
now there, in spite of all said to the
contrary.
"General Weaver combines the practi
cal with the theoretical in an-admirable
manner. However visionary his ideas
may be on national finance his views
-regarding the Weaver exchequer are
sound to the core. The general believes
-that calamity howls are worth as much
per howl as any other kind of political
"pyrotechnics. $50 was the price de
manded for his. speech in Eugene, -one
night last week. Who would not be a
reformer at $50 a night?
Chicago wants a $5,000,000 loan from
congress in order to make the Columbus
fair a success. Chicago has already
promised to raise the money herself, and
as a matter of pure business she ought
to do it. But this, it is claimed, is
impossible, and under the circumstances
as a matter of national pride. Congress
will probably feel called upon to furnish
the needed money. But Chicago has not
' raised herself in the estimation of the
rest of the country by this transaction.

A Lapse of Memory
"HUmph! It's very clear that I am
not in the proper vein today," . growled
Mr. Scribbler as lie threw aside his pen
and substituted a stumpy lead pencil in
its place. ;
"What's the matter now?" asked Mrs.
Scribbler as she left her ironing to come
to his assistance. -
"It's only that Christmas story I
started to write for The Echo. I can't
for the life of me get beyond the open
ing sentence."
"Let me see what yon have written,"
said his wife as she looked over bis
shoulder and read from the paper on the
table: " It was bitter cold. The poor
little match girl on' the corner shivered,
in the biting blast.' Why, that's all
right. Go on," she said encouragingly.
"But I can't seem to remember what
comes next," remonstrated Mr. Scrib
bler. "Let - me see! Urn 'in the biting
blast'--and and drawing her ragged
shawl about her slender, frozen body,
timidly offered her scanty stock of wares
to the passers by."
"That's itl" exclaimed the author as
he drew his wife to him and kissed her
tenderly. ."What a help you are, dear.
I suppose I have written that thing hun
dreds of times, and yet I had utterly for
gotten it." Life.
A, Freak of Science.
An English chemist who was at a
Washington hotel exhibited a little mi
crophone he - had made which would
render audible the footsteps of a fly. It
was only a small affair and consisted of
a box with a sheet of thin straw paper
stretched over the upper side. By means
of a little electrical device, consisting of
two carbon disks, a carbon pencil and a
weak battery, the sheet of paper over
the top of the box was caused to produce
vibrations when a fly walked over it
strong enough to react energetically on
an ordinary telephone transmitter when
held ' close to the latter. Washington

Rheumatism Cared In Three Days.-
Miss Grace Littlejohn is a little girl,
aged eleven years, residingjin Baltimore,
Ohio.. Read what she says : "I was
troubled with rheumatism for two years,
but could get nothing to do me any
good. I was so helpless that I had to be
carried like a babe when I was advised
to get a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain
Balm. I got it from our druggists, Mr.
J. A. Kumber, and in three days I was
up and walking around. I have not felt
any return of it since and my limbs are
limber as they ever were." 50-cent bot

"I am very much pleased with Cham
berlain's Cough Remedy," says H. M.
Bangs, the druggist at Chats worth. 111.
"During the epidemic of la grippe here
it took the lead and was very much bet
ter liked than other cough medicines."
The grip requires precisely the same
treatment . as a very severe cold, for
which this remedy is so efficient. It
will promptly loosen a cold and relieve
the lungs, soon effecting: a permanent
cure, ' while most other medicines iq
common use for colds only give tempor
ary relief. 50 cent bottles for sale by

TO THE TRADE AND CONTRACTORS.
I DESIRE IT TO BE UNDERSTOOD
that I have appointed Wm. Butler
& Co. exclusive agents for the sale of the
"Oregon" lime, at The Dalles, and sur
rounding country. Other parties have,
through surreptitious and unbusinesslike
methods, obtained a small quantity of
this lime, which may. naturally cause
the idea that Butler & Co. are not the
exclusive agents of these goods.
Such, however, is not the fact.
and further stock of this article cannot
be obtained from others than Wm
Butler & Co. The trade, however, will
not lose sight of the fact that the great
strife to obtain the Oregon lime by other
dealers proves conclusively that the
"Oregon" is the best lime in the market.
Very truly
