Sharp Superintendent of Public Schools . . .Troy Shelley Coroner William MlcheU The political conventions which are declaring for the "money of the coneti . tution" are not talking to the point. Gold and silve are the money of the con stitution, and everybody want to have both kept in circulation, if this be pos sible. The fr;e-coinage men say that gold would remain in the currency if the mints were thrown wide . open to silver, while the opponents of free-coinage are convinced that free-coinage would drive gold out and in other ways ways result disasterously for the country. This is the situation exactly and it is be lieved , the anti-free-coinage men have all history and precedent to support their opinion. But. conventions that are demanding the "money of the con stitution" woujd act more honestly if they came out plainly and told what they want. It is not at all improbable that the problem of cheap transportation for farmers is more likely to be solved by electric than .by narrow -gauge steam railroads. An electric road could be built, says the New York Pott, and equipped with power for $5,000 to $7,000 per mile with an annual cost for opera tion of about $750, per mile. Such a road could carry from the' farms to the steam railway station five times as much produce as the farmers could produce, and this excess of cost and capacity is the present great obstacle to its success. A straddle sometimes is necessary in politics, says an exchange, but for a .state convention to adopt a free coinage platform and then instruct its delega tion to vote for an anti-silver candidate, is not straddling, but simply making the convention look ridiculous in the sight of sensible people. 1 ia said that the Civil Service Com mission will make special efforts this year to prevent the collection of money from Federal officers and employes for political purposes ; and that it will have the hearty sympathy and co-operation of President Harrison in the matter. jThe farmers of the United States sent -abroad in March of this year, breadstuff's Valued at $23,000,000 against $12,000,000 -ofsnch exports in March 1891. It is thus the vicious reciprocity clause of the McKinley law is ruining our export 'trade. Fire In Winnipeg;. Winnipeg, May 2. Four blocks were burned in this city by a fire which broke out in the Princess opera-house at 2 o'clock this morning. The flames spread with frightful rapidity, as there was no water, owing to the water works being shut down for repairs. - The loss is estimated at $125,000, with very flight insurance. Mashed the Masher. Washington, May r 2. Congressman Amos Cummings discovered a handsome man paying offensive attentions to his (Cummings') wife. The lady had been annoyed some time, when Cummings administered corporal punishment to the masher. The latter did not give his name, but one of his friends informed Cummings that the masher would chal lenge him to fight a duel, and in case he refused would publicly horsewhip him. An Arkansas Colltr. Nw Orleans, May 2. Sheriff O. H. Luna, of Searcy county, Ark., a repub lican, collected several thousand dollars In taxes recently, and with a companion, J. C Hollis, came -here on a big- spree. They drank fine liquor, treated all com ers, bucked the tiger, and wasted the public funds in all manner of riotous living. . Luna's bondsmen tookhim in hand on his return to Searcy county, and found that he was short $4,000 of state money. Hollis was arrested and disgorged $900, but the rest of the cash is gone. -Luna retains his office,. but . will not collect any more takes. . .Rep. Wilson's bill, to open the Col- ville reservation, finally passed the house yesterday. r-.The bill has now -to go to the Indians for ratification 'of the modifications made by congreesl The commission which treated with the Col villes provided too largely for appropria tions and made it impossible to get the bill through. , . - ' A quantity of nice, clean rasrs wanted at this office.
