The action of a party of Russian refu
gees at Chicago one day last week affords
a striking commentary on unrestricted
immigration. Twenty-five or thirty of
these refugees who had been housed and
fed for weeks at the public expense were
provided with work and requested to
leave. They refused point blank and
insisted on a continuance of charity,
protesting that they were not able to
work. The agents thought otherwise
and as a dernier ressort, ejected them.
After a short time the refugees returned
and made an attack on the building,
tearing down one of the doors. Police
were summoned who succeeded in quiet
ing the rioters for a time, but they soon
returned, backed np by a rabble 'from
the streets. The men again insisted
that they were unable to work but after
two or three hours wrangling with the
police they were forced to leave, which
they did, threatening the while to make
trouble. It is not about time that the
gates of Castle Garden were closed

The Spokane Review refers to a para
graph that appeared in the Chronicle
last week, about the yearling seedling
cherry tree now in . bloom in the
Chronicle show window, and says :
This fairly breaks the record. It is a
common thing for trees in the Inland
Empire to come into bearing in three
years, but for a tree to bear fruit when
six or eight months old has never been
known, even in this favored section.
The valve of products shipped from
the United States during the twelve
the enormous total of $1,006,000,000.

Ex-Governor, ex-State Senator,' ex
Congressman, ex-Collector of Internal
Revenue John Whiteaker was beaten in
.the democratic county convention of
Lane county a short time ago for the
nomination for county judge, by a Neb
raska man who has not been long
enough in Oregon to get naturalized. '
The penitentiary jute mill at Walla
Walla, is about ready for operation. It
will afford work for 200 prisoners and
turn out 400 grain. sacks a day.. A sim
ilar institution in the -Oregon peniten
tiary would be very satisfactory to the
people and especially profitable to the
farmers.'
' A Panic Averted.
Chicago, April 24. Just as the Bee
Hive drygoods house opened for business
yesterday, a fire started near the main
entrance, cutting of the escape 250 Bales
women. A panic was narrowly averted,
and the prompt work of the firemen
quenched the flames. Loss 15,000."
, Panic at a Fire.
Ashland, Wis., April 24. The Amer
ican bouse was partly destroyed by fire
at midnight. There was a panic among
guests, and several narrowly escaped
with their lives. A number were badly
injured by jumping from the windows;
unaa stoma.
. The sloths at the Zoological gardens
are not quite so green as they were when
they first arrived. We do not refer to
their growing recognition of the fact
that nuts and bans are not suitable food
for an arboreal creature which subsists
nppn leaves, bat to a literal change of
color. It is a most remarkable fact that
the sloth has in the wild state green hair,
which causes it to resemble, as it clings
to a branch, an excrescence of that
branch covered with greenish gray li
chens. Inthis way the sloth may perhaps
sometimes escape the keen eye of a ja
guar. '
It is still more remarkable that the
green color is not resident in the hair it
self , but is due to the presence of quan-
, tities of minute green plantar and this
explains how it is that in captivity the
sloth changes color; the plants, deprived
of the damp heat of their native forests,
die, and are not replaced, so the peculiar
gray green which is so characteristic of
the sloth is changed to a brownish gray.
