The Times-Mountaineer says: "The
present attitude' (of the Chronicle) in
" regard to the republican ticket may be
Gourlay's own. If so the republicans
who own stock in the paper should free
themselves from the suspicion of dissatis-
. 'faction. Without an atom of reason the
Chboniclb has chosen to take the posi
tion that the republican ticket now in
the field is a Moody ticket." ' Now the
truth is the Chbonicle has never taken
any such position,' nor has it ever said
one word of evil concerning the republi
can, ticket nor of any man on it. The
Times-Mountaineer is simply in a bole
After the state convention it boasted of
' having routed the "faction," at the pri
maries, at the county convention and at
the state convention, ""horse, foot and
' dragoons." By the term faction - as it
has since explained, it meant the direc
tors of the boat company. ..The Chbok-
" iclb contended, what 1 everybody here
knows to be true, that there are only
" two factions, and that if the one has
routed the other in the manner described
the victor must be' on top. ' Then we
asked for proof that Moody was on top,
by demanding the name of a ' single
Moody man on the ticket, affirming that
thepeople would rise in their might' and
down such an one at the polls. Then
the Times-Mountaineer caught in its own
trap, charged the Chronicle with fight.
ing the ticket' This is the whole story.
The Chronicle has not started this con
. troverty and does not; shun it.. It is not
fighting the ticket, at the "same time it
ought to be understood anil is, by every
- one except the dull IntetHgence-that pre-
rsides over the Timesr Mountaineer, that
this is not a party organ. It is not fight
ing simply to see men, elected to officeJ
cut for principles that it believes to be
"beneficial to the community and nation,'
- and only for men as they represent these
principles. In their private relations It
ia very possible that, the men who con
trol this journal may be found as true to
'the party, of : their ;, choice, on election
' day, as the factipn that, seeks through
the. Mountaineer to admonish-' them, of
their duty.. , That howeyer is something
"with which the Chronicle,. as a news-
paper, has nothing to do.,.-
The Eastern Oregon Republican asks :
"If the tariff is a tax why is it that wire
nails sell for $1.90 a keg; while the duty
is (2 a keg? . And: why . does calico sell
; for 144 cents a yard and less, iwhile . the
duty .is 5. cents' : yard?., and. .why can-
cloth be bought for 75 cents a yard the
duty on which in 97 .cents a yard?"
The truth is the tariff is a tax when the
consumer- uses articles of foreign produc
tion Subject to an import, duty ..i The
. price of such articles is increased ; to the
consumer by the amount I of the -duty
paid at the port of entry. ;;; But- protec
tion has so stimulated home production
. and competion has so reduced the prices
of borne manufactures that practically, so
far as our home products,' which enter
.largely' into : the consumption: of the
masses are concerned, the -tariff is not a

A traveling man who chanced to be

rheumatism she ever used." -50 cent

Mr. J. P. Blaize, an extensive real
estate dealer in Des Moines, Iowa-, nar
rowly escaped one of the severest at
tacks of pneumonia while in the north
ern part of that state during a recent
blizzard, says the Saturday Review. Mr.
Blaize bad occasion to drive several
miles during the storm and was so thor
oughly chilled that be was unable to
get warm, and inside of an hour after
his return he was threatened with a
severe case of pneumonia or lung fever.
Mr. Blaize sent to the nearest drug store
and got a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy, of which he had often heard,
and took a number of large doses. 'He
says the effect was wonderful and that
in a short time he was breathing quite
easily. He kept on taking the medicine
and the next day was able to come to
Des Moines. . Mr. Blaize regards his
cure as simply "wonderful. 50 cent
