Sharp Superintendent of Public Schools. . .Troy Shelley Coroner William Michell While Oregon is doing practically nothing to reap any reward front a proper exhibit of her resources at the world's fair, California is looking into a future beyond the fair, in which the fair exhibit will be made a permanent con tribution to the state's prosperty. ' A meeting will be held in San Francisco on the 4th inst., at which it is proposed, to get a united effort of the local world's fair committee, board of supervisors, Mechanics' Institute, board of trade and real estate exchange, to join in endeavor after the world's fair to have the Cali fornia building and entire exhibit brought to San Francisco and placed permanently in Golden Gate Park. The Heppner Gazette says it is gener ally understood that W. K. Ellis has the entire delegation from the seventh judic ial district on his side for nomination for congress from this district. The friends of Mr, Ellis also claim that he has practically the whole of the sixth judicial district and that he will be the second choice of the. majority of v'.ele gates from other sections. This should secure his nomination if the valley counties carry out their pretentions of conceding the nomination to an Eastern Oregon man. One of the boldest political schemes of a national character ever planned in Colorado has just came to light. The King Solomgn mining company, of Creede, has Bent agents to eastern cities to create a free silver sentiment, before .the conventions meet at Minneapolis :and Chicago. They will put up im mense sums of money to carry out the plan. ' The day the cascade locks are opened "will see property in this city advanced from its present rates more than double, much of it a good deal more than double. We are assured that the eyes of more "than one Portland capitalist are turned towards The Dalles as a place where in vestments in real estate can be safely made on the strength of the city being the head of navigation. "The Goldendale Sentinel says : If The "Dalles Chronicle wishes to publish Klickitat news we Would like to know why it don't copy from some more reliable source than the Leader. The Chronicle has no proof that there is any more reliable source than the Leader. A Portland paper says that Hermann will be nominated by acclamation at the republican convention for the first con gressional district. His competitors Tongue, Geer and Miller are not cutting any great figure in their opposition. The East Oreqonian has discovered that "the greatest men of the ages have worn the cheapest clothes." Then brother Jackson, to prove the truth of bis own aphorism, ought to dress in rags. An election of officers for the town of Goldendale will be held in that citv next Manday, when the question of license or 1 : -ii i . i uu uwuw win utj me cniei issue. Unhappy Conditions. St. Paul, Minn., March 31. Reports from North Dakota and eastern Mon tana indicate the greatest spring floods in ten years. Residents all along the river are preparing to move to higher ground. To the south of Grafton is a lake reaching for miles into the country. In Montana there are' washouts in everv direction, the Great Northern, being the chief sufferer. The main break occurred on the Montana division, between Will mton and Springbrook, caused by an overflow of the Missouri tributaries which at this time of year are fed by xneltnig snow from the Rocky moan- tains. It will take thirty-six hours to repair the road. There are a number of societies in the world that bear strange names, but probably one of the most curious was a club founded in 1735 by an English ac tor. It was called "The Sublime Soci ety of Beefsteaks," and had among its . members the Prince of Wales and other royal personages. They met in the painting room of the Covent Garden theater, and dined uppn beefsteaks. The club was in existence for more than ff hundred years, and became quite noted because of its odd customs. An other strange nat was that of the "Scriblerus club," which Swift founded in 1714, and to which Pope, Gay and other literary men belonged. Harper's - Democratic State Convention. A democratic state convention will be held in the city of Portland, Or., April 19, 1892, at 10 o'clock a. m., for the pur pose of placing in nomination two can didates for congress, one supreme judge, one candidate in each judicial district for circuit judge and prosecuting attor ney, to be voted for at the coming June election, and such other business as may properly como before said conven tion. A republican convention for the state of Oregon, is called to meet in the city of Portland on Wednesday, the 6th day of April, 1892, at 11 o'clock a. m., for the purpose of nominating candidate. lor tue omce of supreme Judge, two congressmen, presidential electors, members of the state board of equaliza tion, and other district officers, and to transact such other business as may properly come before the convention. The same beinst one delegate at laree from each county, and one delegate for every 200 votes, and one for. every frac tion over one-halt tnereol, cast for Con gressman at the June election in 1890. The committee recommended that the Primaries be held on Saturday, March' 19, "and the County Convention on Sat urday, March 26," unless otherwise or dered by the proper County Committees. All voters who favor the republican policy of internal improvements, wrotec- tion of American productions and labor, and guarding sacredly the rights of every American citizen at home and abroad. are cordially invited to unite with us.
