He bad required by hard work, some thing over $100 in coin when he thought he would visit the, city and help deepen the shade of its vermillion. Painting a town Is hard work at best and John grew weary and laid himself down on the sidewalk to sleep. Then the ubiquitous Con Howe came along and 'gathered up the limp remains and put them in the cooler. Yesterday morning Mr. Doe was brought before his honor the re corder, charged with being drunk. He was duly fined and allowed to go oat on his own recognizances to see if he could find $105 that he said he had lost the night before. The money was found deposited in a saloon and John was so happy over the event that he thought he must treat himself. He did so and feeling like another man he treated the other man and kept treating and paint ing the town till drunkeness and night. Then the marshal gathered him in again and this morning found him with nevar cent to pay his two fines. He will work them out on the streets when his stomach settles. Excursion to Tha Cascades. Concerning Job Printing. Representative Scott, of Illinois, has introduced a bill prohibiting the post- office department from selling stamped envelopes bearing the usual printed re quest lor a return to the owner after a limited period. v Speaking of the reso lution, Mr.. Scott said: "Under the present law, the government is .a direct competitor with every printing house in the country, it is an unwarranted tres pass by the government upon the private business of every printer in the United Dtates. .si any millions of dollars an nually are by this act taken from the printing business. The government should take its' hands off and not oppress one of the greatest and most important industries of our county." Appropriate to this. matter of job printing, The Chboniclb feels justified in asserting that work turned out in its job depart ment is in every way equal to any com ing from the east. This was attested yesterday when our enterprising fellow citizen, Mr. John Booth, was accused of sending ea t for printing which was done in The Chboniclb job office. Very few persona have ever engaged in such a hunt for rabbits as a party of young men living near Homer partici pated in one day recently. In the. absence of all large game and the prohibition as to shooting chickens and quails, the young farmers pass away the monotony of the wintry days by or ganizing hunting parties, which enter into competition as to which party will bring in the most game by a given time. Usually these competition hunts are be tween the young men of different neigh borhoods, and neighborhood "honor" is big thing in this country.' A very exciting hunt was made by two parties of farmers living near Homer, which, on account of the number of men engaged and the amount of game bagged, will be household lore in the neighbor hood for many winters. There was one company of twenty -five men and another of twenty-four men. All had to have their game in by 7 o'clock in the even ing, and most of the men started in quest of "Brer Rabbit" before daylight. "And they gathered them in from the high ways and hedges, for when the count is made m the evening one party bad secured 633 rabbits, while the other had slain 625, making a total of 1,158. A sumptuous supper was spread that night, for which the defeated party had to pay. Then the rabbits were sold and tha -money divided into three purses. which were presented to the men who killed the moat rabbit.'.. Jess Doney took first, having captured sixty-nine. Chicago Inter Ocean.', Mo Prtn la Mono Orders. There does not seem to be any prospect that the money order business can be made to pay a profit to Uncle Bam in future. It was started in . 1885 with an appropriation by congress of $100,000, and daring the first eight months there was a losa of more than $7,000. As the system grew it became more remuner ative to the government, until it began to show a margin of gain about ten years, ago. For the last three years, however, there has been a loss on 'it, mainly be cause the average sum sent by .money order ha diminished. The average cost to the government of a money order, whether for a small or large amount, is . a trifle over ten .cents, while the average fee paid now is only a fraction more than eight cents. However, the losa on domestic money orders is made np to some extent by the profit on international money orders. During the last fiscal year the pofttofiice department cleared f IS'.UWO on the pur chase of bills of exchange to nettle bal ances with foreign countries on account of money orders issued.- Washington Stac . .
