Saloon Association composed of ministers
and church jwenohers was formed in
Tacoma and Aboat twenty-five arrests
of saloon keepers Jroin different parts of
the city were .made for violating the
siatute requiring the saloons to be closed

brought to trial the jury failed to agree.
One or t wo others were carried up after
,t lie conviction and the decision of the
lower court sustained. Twenty-two re
mained on the docket up till last Tues
day when prosecuting attorney Claypool
moved to liave them dismissed as the
matter would be taken up some time in
.the future in another form. The result

to the prosecution. .
After several weeks of hard" work the
two solicitors sent out" by Portland lo
raise subscriptions for the world's fair
exhibit have succeeded in obtaining only

chiefly notes. Much interest und some
enthusiasm, wo are told, was manifested
but not much money was forthcoming,
and it takes money to make exhibit's.
Now Portland has bad another meeting
and has passed a new Bet of resolutions
to raise r0,000 and the Test of Oregon
will wait with bated .breath to see if
these resolutions were business or only

The -latest enormity perpetrated by
that wicked invention of Bijl MeKinley,
the MeKinley Bill, happened the other
day in Northern Ohio where one of the
proprietors of a large woolen mill was
adjudged insane and committed to an
asylum. His peculiar form of madness
consisted in imagining that he had le
cpme enormously wealthy since the hew
tariff law placed an increased duty on
wool. Whereas we are assured he had
actnallv become poorer and as an es
teemed contemporary says:' The Mc-
Kinley Bill was the -thing that "hoo
dood" him.

Senator Warren, of Wyoming, seems

sheep herder. We see no reason why he
should not be. There is nothing dis
honorable in the calling of a sheep

Gov. Jones, of Alabama, spoke at
Blue Creek mines last week, led in a

Charles Goodnight, the cattle baron of
Texas, and probably one of the best
posted cattlemen in the United States,
wnile in Irimdacl the other day was
credited by one of the papers of that
city, with making the statement that the
number of cattle on the range' had been
reduced to such an extent during the
last few years, that a reaction in the
direction of bigger prices would soon set
in. He gave it as his opinion that in
the entire state of Texas, today, there is
nota train-load of three-vear-old steers,
and that when the scarcity begins to be
felt, up will go the prices. Mr. Good
night is in a position to know what he is
talking about.. .
