The Chronicle is the Only Paper in
The Dalles that Receives the Associated
Press Dispatches.
The Northwest Pacific Farmer has the
following :
"One will occasionally find a man in
the employ of a big corporation who has
enough manhood about him to become
disgusted with their nefarious or unwar
ranted impositions, and with the strength
oi his convictions break away from a
lucrative position and stand out as a
man. Such a person has Captain J. W.
Troup, superintendent of the Union Pa
cific water lines of the Northwest proven
himself to be. For many months he has
been compelled to run the line of boats
from this place lo The Dalles in a man
ner which he knew to he contrary to the
wish, best interest and accommodation
of the patrons, as well as to the detri
ment and disgrace of the boat line itself.
Captain Troup stayed with the company
until such papers as The Dalles Chron
icle, Northwest Paciffc Farmer and other
papers which were working in the inter
est of the people showed the workings of
things in their true light, then he with
drew. In an interview he gave as the
cause of his withdrawl :
"' There is nothing to say regarding
the affair. I sent in my resignation a
. week ago, and it was accepted. 'I have
no complaint against the company, as
far as I am personalis concerned, and
they have none against me. I have
been very much dissatisfied with the
way things have been running, and as
I saw no way to remedy them on my
. part,. I tendered my resignation to the
company. I leave on my own accord,
and having been offered a position which
will be advantageous for me fo accept, I
have chosen this opportunity to resign.' "
- If many another honest man in the
employ of this company would send in
their resignation it would soon bring Jay
Gould who has no interest in the North
west except getting all that be can out
of it, t J his senses. If this man who has
jeived faithfully for" o many years and
-who was one of the most important
officials will resign, because things will
: not be run right, there must be some--.
.thing indeed rotten in the management.

their main reason for desiring there
turn of the empire is, as it is said, that
" under the republic the prices of coramo--Mlities
have doubled. Men who want a

E. E. Charman of Oregon City was
awakened Tuesday night by a severe
pain in his foot, and upon brief investi
gation found his bed was on ' fire. He
seized wraps and finally sucdeeded in
smothering the flames. The cause of
this midnight experience was the elec
tric light. Mr. Charman was detained
in his 'store later than usual Monday
night, and upon reaching his home re
tired, and thoughtfully placed the incan
descent, electric light under the clothes
to warm his feet. He went to sleep with
his electric lied fellow and was awakened
by the blaze.
The descriptions , published by the
public press of the new Catholic 'cathe
dral to be erected in Portland some day
are purely imaginary. Plans for such
an edifice have not been contemplated.
When His Grace, however, decides on
erecting a new cathedral it is needless to
say that it will be one pi the grandest
in these united Mates. Uaeholic sen

A Michigan judge has decided that
common intelligence and such in forma
tion as comes from reading the news
papera does not unfit ' a man for jury
duty. This is a decided victory for in
telligence in the jury room, but it will

Arlington, Minn., Nov. 20. It was
learned this evening that J. A. Oblinger,
owner of the Arlington bank and the
village postmaster, is a defaulter to the
extent of $15,000 or $20,000. Depositors
will lose everything, as the bank was a
private one. The postoffice is not in
volved. Death From Excessive Drinking.
. St. Paul, Nov, 20. The dead bodies
of John Whalen and James Walsh were
found .in the upper room of the Manitoba
house this morning. The police sus
pected foul play at first, but the cor
oner's jury has decided that the cause of
death was excessive drinking.

City of Mexico, Nov. 21. A telegram
recently received from Guatemala says
the political excitement is increasing
there and that no day passes that Presi
dent Barrillas does not find a note
threatening him with death. '
Col. Polk, president of the southern
farmers' alliance, declares that if Cleve
land is nominited for president next
year he cannot carry North Carolina.
The idea of North Carolina renouncing
Democracy is startling enough to take
away the breath of a Kentucky colonel.
